986 2.5 Cold start problems
Good Day all,
Since a few months my 1997 2.5l Boxster is having cold start issues which are slowly getting worse. The engine stalls immediately on a cold start - or when I have attempted to start it several times, the idle starts hunting up and down until it slowly settles. Touching the gas pedal helps a bit as it warms up the engine quicker. Things which are already done: - Checked for codes - none found - O2 sensors changed - IMS changed - Clutch changed - Chain guides changed - Camshaft deviation checked - MAF changed - Checked for vacuum leaks - AOS changed - Plugs + tubes changed - Fuel filter changed - ICV changed/tested - TB cleaned Once hot - car starts fine though performance doesn't seem optimal during driving. https://youtu.be/aCvgvcqTgU8 I hope someone can help me out - getting quite tired of this. Please check the video for reference Last edited by poortmanc; 12-17-2019 at 04:55 AM.. |

I had a very similar issue when I got my Boxster. Will it stay running if you give it gas after turning it over? Holding the pedal down partially?
On mine it ended up being the idle control valve on the side of the throttle body. I have never read of one failing before, so skipped over it many times diagnosing the problem. You can try cleaning icv, but it didnt help me. I replaced mine with a bosch unit. It sounds like you have checked/replaced some of the basics. I'd keep going down the list...air, fuel, spark. You could check fuel pressure at the rail. How old is your fuel filter? Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |

Hi, many thanks for your reply.
Indeed, it will stay running when I give it a bit of gas when turning over - though sputtering a bit. I forgot to mention that the ICV was swapped as well by a 2nd hand one. Idle corrected more quickly though after driving a few km's the problem became as bad as it was before (so in my opinion it has to do something with the learning of the DME. Idle hunts slightly after a reset). Don't know about the fuel pressure yet - someone hinted me as well that it could be a failing fuel pump or a failing Engine Coolant Sensor which is giving the wrong value. Fuel filter was replaced recently. |

To me it sounds like a fuel issue.

Sounds strange to me because it seems to be temperature related.. I had a broken Coolant Sensor on my 2001 TT which gave the same problem

That is odd.
If you have access to Durametric I think you can see what the temp sensor reading is. Might give some insight. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |
