CLU got wet, no start, then started, now no
CLU got wet, started after bailing the water and numerous attempts but had to get fuel. Fuel door locked, had to turn off motor to unlock door (locking system was not working). Got fuel, no start. Tried several times whilst waiting for AAA. When they got there, tried again and started. Drove back to the house. Bailed more water, started once then nothing.
Cleaned the board, everything works (keys, locks, rear defroster, et cetera) except the top and starter. No codes, fuses removed/replaced, all relays removed/replaced, DME plugs reconnected. Tried grounding the Start Relay YE/VI/BR wire in the trunk, it works with power on the relay YE/BK arm but no starter. Bentley book says there is a Relay Start Lock wire that connects to the same starter terminal as the Start Relay but the stupid book says it connects to grid C183. The grid stops at 160. How can I drop the top manually so I can get at the starter? Bentley only shows how to close it by removing the cables. Should I remove the top relay and apply power to the II/5 ans II/7 terminals? Anything else to check? Thanks. |

Checked the power from the ignition switch to the start relay and jumpered the output of the relay to the starter. That works.
The DME is not powering the Rear Support Relay. Got the top open by putting power to the top motor at the relay contacts. |

The CLU under the driver's seat has to send a coded signal to the DME to activate various systems (fuel pump, ignition, etc.) in order for the car to start. If it shorted internally when it was wet, non-start is the usual outcome. Sometimes the CLU can be repaired, but not always.

The only switch that is not working is the driver's door closed. Everything worked before so I am not sure what the affect is.
Tried swapping another CLU and pill from their key to mine but still does not work. CLU must be sending a code to the DME. Need to get the car running so bought another unit (sorry Pelican, better price elsewhere). One place had a good price but wanted $75 for shipping. I suspect that is how they make up for the lower price. Shipping from the dealer that I got it from was less than $10. Swapped out the EEPROM from my unit to the new one and everything works. I do not know why they say the CLU can only be programmed once, EEPROM means Electrically Erasable Programmable Memory. If it is actually true then it is the FPGA that does not allow the code in the EEPROM to be changed. I suspect that is a dealer scam. Also, the CLU can be programmed with four keys. You do not need to buy another key when it is programmed, another dealer scam. |

In wet weather, moisture can build up in the distributor cap and cause it to short, which will leave the vehicle without a reliable spark. Faulty starter A broken starter is another common reason your car won't start.

This is not a Dodge, coil over plug, no distributor.
Perhaps you missed the part "everything works" which includes the top and starter. |
