Trouble with Code Reader

So I have a 3100c - CanOBD2 Code Reader that has worked fine on BMWs and VWs up to 2008 year models. When I connect the reader to my 2000 Boxster S, I receive a read error. My code reader is an older model and updated with the latest software release but I feel that it should work since everything appears normal on my other cars. Also, I took the car by Advance Auto & Auto Zone and the store Code Reader could not pull up the code. Does the Boxster require a special Code Reader like the AutoEnginuity's Scan Tool or is something else going on? Thanks in advance...

No, Porsche does not require a special code reader to access OBD II codes, just about any make or model will get you into the “non proprietary” codes section in the DME, as required by Federal regulations. Unfortunately, to get at what Porsche has designated as “proprietary” (ABS, PSM, Airbags, etc.)you will need a PST II, PIWIS or Durametric system.

I assumed that a CEL would be "non proprietary" codes. Is this an incorrect assumption? I do not have PSM. Thanks...

I would expect most “CEL” events to be non proprietary in nature. Because you are getting a “read error”, it may not be making the connection at the under dash port, a problem with the unit itself, or there may be a genuine inability for the DME to communicate. I would suggest trying another unit if you cannot get yours to function; if the second unit also cannot communicate, then there is an issue requiring some additional diagnostics……….

I swear I've received that error and it was an issue of which position the ignition switch was in at the time. Once sorted, it read just fine. I use a generic code reader, Actron brand. But the theory is the same for any of em.

My code reader instructions state to connect the reader and then move the switch in the run position. I have not tried it in the off position yet. I will give that a shot this afternoon. Thanks....

I've never had good luck with readers on these cars. Even the PST-2 often has problems. I would try different combinations of key on / off and plug / unplug for a while to see if you can get it to work properly.

I have the same problem with my code reader work on all my cars to get it to work on my boxster I have to push on the plug and hold it to the right then it reads it just fine it's not the reader it the boxster plug

LOL...I had to do the very same thing to get my reader to work. I believe it has something to do with the Boxster's diagnostic port. The reader's plug snaps nicely into the diagnostic port on my BMW but fits very loosely in the Boxster.

True, the PST2 plug sometimes falls out or doesn't seat completely on the Boxster port. I would just try wiggling it a bit to start.
