Spin off filter
Since I have been on the forum I have read countless post telling to check filter at every oil change for metal particles that may be signs of possable IMS failure. So with the spin off type filter is this not a bit harder to do? Or is this an upgrade you do after IMS retro fit, is having spin off filter really that much more superior than oem?

I've had the LN spin on filter on my car since they were introduced. Little more effort to open the filter for examination, but worth it because the element is much better at particulate filtration (please refer to the LN website for details). Also highly recommended you drop the sump for examination...bit more effort, but worth saving your engine if any foreign matter is found.

I also thought is the Proform, but was just trying to confirm it. There are several makers of these cutters, some nice, others not so nice; this happens to look particularly well made.....

Thanks fellas, question asked answer given. I have found my next project, will drop sump and also check that out when I do my IMS sometime this week. Filter cutter reminds me of pipe cutter when I used to help pops do plumming jobs, anybody try using a large pipe cutter from home depot? Might be cheaper.

I will check for the manufacturer and it was about 60 or 70 maybe. Should last you a life time. It appears it may have been made/ marketed by Proform, but there could be knock offs or maybe a different company. No issues to date and i have had it 4 of 5 years.

Thanks. Mine is approaching 40 years old (I have no idea how many filters it has cut open) and is by a company that died years ago. As it is showing its age, perhaps it is time for a replacement.............

Check with aircraft spruce or brown tool for filter cutters.

Just replace the cutter wheels ad bearing if needed.

Unfortunately, both are blind riveted in on my unit, and as I obtained it for around $10 at an equipment auction several decades back, it surely does not owe me anything.

If there is anything I've learned about tooling over the years, it is to never buy anything with an automotive equivalent from an aircraft supply company as they typically charge $100 for the same item a outlet like Jeg's or Summit sell for $50; and filter cutters are no exception.............

Being i'm an aircraft mechanic, i stay away from automotive tools for aircraft, unless there common hand tools.
