first time boxster owner I NEED HELP! I MADE A VIDEO, ENGINE sound PROBLEM? what is
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK so i just made this video i put on youtube GO ON YOUTUBE AND PUT THIS IN THE SERACH LISTING = "MY PORSCHE BOXSTER S PROBLEM PLEASE HELP? WHATS THAT CHICKEN NOISE " MY PORSCHE BOXSTER S PROBLEM PLEASE HELP? WHATS THAT CHICKEN NOISE - YouTube im not sure what is up with this car. but its making some kind of noise when you first start the car and then when you start the car, its fine for about 5 seconds...then power drops big time on rpm and sometimes dies if i hit the gas and leave it rpm up high for about 2 minutes...then it runs OK also there is a pinging and popping sound from the air intake when its running rough... you can hear it in the video to give you background...i buy toys and flip time sometimes...motorcycles,boats, jet skis and cars. when i bought this car the check engine light was on for maf sensor which i replaced and just needed a convertible top bracket. but car has been running like this ever since i replaced the maf sensor. is it possible that a bad sensor is still to blame or what ....because after the car runs for 5 minutes its fine???? what could it be, plugs or ??? these are hard motors to work on since they are in the middle of the car but what do you think |

I'm not a Boxster expert, but I have worked on many starters. To me, that sounds like the starter bendix is dry of lube. (Pretty sure of this, if it only makes the noise on starting.)
I'm not sure as to the popping noise. Good luck! Clint

I had a Subaru that did this sort of thing. It was the starter. The bendix was not springing back to disengage. After a few revs it would release. Ran like doo doo and made all kinds of funny sounds until it let go (like your popping sounds), then everything was normal until the next time it was started. There was a burn smell too, as the starter was over heating from the revs!
I have no idea if this makes any sense in this case, but I'd check that starter for sure. Good luck. |

Have you checked the codes since? Whenever you replace something and things aren't right, you check for additional codes and then reverse what you did. This is because you may not have put all the connections on correctly. If no codes and all connections are clean and correct, the ECU has to learn and it does that by driving.
The whirring sound at start up might be totally unrelated, so follow up on that. One thing for sure, revving a newer style engine like the Porsche will not clear up or out anything. |

The squeal at the beginning does sound like a starter not disengaging right away. Or a roller bearing that is going out (but if it was a bearing it would make the sound at other times, not just when starting).
The popping is the engine backfiring into the intake. It can be caused by bad MAF readings to the DME at low RPM when cold, or bad crank sensors that mis-time the spark advance when cold. It isn't good to run the car with the popping going on as it is possible to crack the intake manifold, which is an ultrasonically welded plastic molded part. Or the boots that hold the intake to the heads can pop open and cause even more serious rough running issues.

I get that same "whirring" sound on startup every once-in-a-while too and have figured it's the starter not disengaging as well. I've never really been concerned by it but should I be? The only damage that could result is to the starter itself right? In which case, my logic has been to hold off replacing it with a rebuilt one until the day it actually fails...
