Tire Trailer Lights and Turn-Signal Error Codes
I have a 1-axle utility trailer that is towed behind my '06 Cayman S for tires and tools for DE. I installed Curt Manf. 55130 Converter 4-Flat Packaged to connect the Cayman wiring to the trailer's harness. All the trailer lights work, but I get an error code with every use of my turn signals, though the former owner towed it behind his 996 GT3 without incident. I'm wondering if the Cayman monitors amperage or voltage drop to determine if the lights are working, and if adding additional load of the trailer exceeds the "normal range". At present the trailer lights are incandescent; I was considering changing to an LED light package, as these have a lower draw. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure, but you probably want one of the isolation type wiring converters (Curt Circuit Protected Powered Converter w/ SMT Curt Wiring 56146), that have an additional battery connection. They sense the signal, rather than draw current from car taillights.
LED trailer lights are a great update, they have really dropped in price. |
