I am hoping to buy a 2000 Boxster S made 1-8-00 with 38000 miles on it. VIN WP0CB2983YU661733 Engine M96/2167Y04228
Does this have the double IMS bearing? When should the bearing be replaced?
Thank you!

The bearing should be replaced right away if it never has been. Give our parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799. They can figure out what part or repair kit you need.

On the 2000-2001 cars, there is not way to know which style IMS bearing is in the car without taking it apart and looking. These is no other way to tell, regardless of what you find posted.

My 2000 S, that I purchased in January of this year, was made in February and I believe it had the double bearing. It needed some other work, and I had them do the IMS while they were there. My independent shop said the old bearing felt good, but when they pulled it it had oil behind it indicating the seals had already gone and it would only have been a matter of time for it to fail. It had 67000 miles on it. It now has the LN ceramic bearing. I'm glad I had it done now.
