I am hoping to buy a 2000 Boxster S made 1-8-00 with 38000 miles on it. VIN WP0CB2983YU661733 Engine M96/2167Y04228
Does this have the double IMS bearing? When should the bearing be replaced? Thank you! __________________ This post was auto-generated based upon a question asked on our tech article page here: Pelican Technical Article: Common Boxster Engine Problems and Failures - 986 / 987 |

The bearing should be replaced right away if it never has been. Give our parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799. They can figure out what part or repair kit you need.

My 2000 S, that I purchased in January of this year, was made in February and I believe it had the double bearing. It needed some other work, and I had them do the IMS while they were there. My independent shop said the old bearing felt good, but when they pulled it it had oil behind it indicating the seals had already gone and it would only have been a matter of time for it to fail. It had 67000 miles on it. It now has the LN ceramic bearing. I'm glad I had it done now.
