R53 spark plug change

Hi all,

Is using a torque wrench when replacing the spark plugs necessary, or will simple hand tightening with a socket wrench be enough?

Thanks in advance

Yes, plugs should tightened to specified torque. Gen 1 engines had a tendency to eject the plugs, taking the threads out with them. Torquing eliminates over-tightening, which may weaken and damage threads.

You can get away with not using a torque wrench, the critical thing is to not over-tighten because you could strip the thread out of the head. Then you would need a repair of that, I think with a helicoil.
