I have a 05 mini convertible with a dead battery. Will replacing the battery require registration?

It should not. Just the 2nd gen cars do, and not all of them.

Good info Dave. Yes, the R56 models that come equiped with the IBS unit will require registration: MINI Cooper R56 Battery and Connection Notes Replacement (2007-2011). Gen 1 MINI's do not have the IBS units.
