'02 R53 - replaced original steering pump with a reman Dorman unit. Seemed to work ok, however after a day or so of use, the pump stays on when ignition off which is the same symptom as the original. Question is; what energizes the pump? Does the key on energize the pump? If so, what is the purpose of the yellow wire connected to the alternator? Thanks for your help.

Your new pump is likely faulty.

See this discussion I had with some folks few years back.

Did you check with a dealer to make sure that your P/S pump may have qualified for the recall?
