Self-Driving Car Claims Another Life

An Uber self-driving car, while being operated in autonomous mode, just ran over a pedestrian in Phoenix. I'm not sure how many of these incidents the public will accept before demanding some sort of legislation.

The ones in SFO (not UBER) tried to wreck me twice over the past 6 months.
Given how they drive (and stop for no reason), I'm surprised they tagged a pedestrian - I would have assumed they caused a death by stopping for no reason and causing a pileup behind them. That is their current specialty!

I find it amazing that life saving drugs go through years and years of FDA checks and rechecks but autonomous cars went from nowhere to on my commute in no time ! "hey, we got computer driven cars right here - Oh that's OK, put them on the road, no problem !!" Does anyone understand computers at all ? I mean just this month Microsoft released 2 patches that breaks tons of stuff - patches!!!

A few massive lawsuits, like the one surely to stem from this accident, might change the landscape with regards to self-driving cars.

Having done fight test for many years, I simply cannot believe these cars are on the road: Show me the test results on the track, under real wold conditions: Conditions, hours, scenarios, etc, etc. The Department of Transportation needs to be held accountable.

The FAA won't allow an unmanned 55lb air vehicle to fly above 400ft agl in rural airspace legally, but we have unmanned cars on the road, around people? GMAFB.

The UAV math is so much more simple than the car math it beggars the mind.

I hate litigation, but sue the tires off the operator of this vehicle.

You don't do beta testing around humans.

By the current attitudes in legislature they are going to probably ban pedestrians being outside of designated crosswalks even though technically J-walking is already prohibited in most congested areas.

Once we all have our chips implanted the cars will know where we are so they can avoid us, at least until the robot war when they start targeting us.

In this case there was a driver on board the Uber car as well so we have an eye witness as to what happened, but they aren't really saying what happened. Did she fall in front of the car when she crossed outside the crosswalk? Did the car just not react in time or plainly missed her? Not much info on any of the articles other than she wasn't in a crosswalk.

Y'all know this is exactly the road we are going down; first driverless cars to make private ownership impossible then and possibly before chipping us for our own good.

So it is possible a person walked in front of a car in a way the car couldn't avoid?

"in autonomous mode with an operator behind the wheel "

Operator = driver. Why is operator not responsible? Isn't that why they are there?

I'm curious as to why we assume the fault lies with the self-driving car rather than with the a person walking out in front of a moving vehicle.

Is it an automatic bias against self-driving cars? Is it the wording used without knowing more detail?

Kevin Ward Jr. tried to attack a moving race car and died. Wouldn't of made a difference who was driving that race car when something like that happens.

I almost hit a bicyclist a couple days ago and the only thing that saved him was my wife in the passenger seat screaming. He was a homeless crazy guy who pulled out from behind a car right into the blind spot of the Cayenne’s huge A pillar on the driver’s side. I slammed on the brakes in the middle of a green light intersection as this idiot cruised through his red light on the bicycle. He yelled at me the whole time as I sat there looking up at the green light. Point is, it may not be the car’s fault but self driving cars should be better at such situations than we are.

Maybe, just maybe, the cars are only programmed to 'look' for humans in the areas they've been programmed as having crosswalks present.

I'm ok with anything that gets rid of Uber drivers. I honestly have no idea how most of them are allowed behind the wheel of a car.
