New Pikes Peak record
Volkswagen I.D. R (but please, do something about these names!!), 7m57.148s.
It's interesting that they ended up with something that closely resembles an LM Prototype car. I imagine they had complete freedom to design something that was aerodynamically efficient for something with a cockpit and 4 wheels. "Only" 670hp and 479ft-lbs but very useful in a 1100kg car with no power penalty due to altitude. It's only going to get faster from here. ![]()

Smart of them to use the allready developed body type.
Pikes Peak seems a perfect venue for electric propulsion to excell. Not too long, and as you said, no impact from the elevation gain that so impacts the fuel driven vehicles. There will no doubt be other venues that will offer similar opportunity for electric vehicles. Much to the chagrin of the haters. Exciting times! Cheers Richard |

Very cool. Now I want the video.
preferrably with the sound dubbed in from something that's running an ICE, hahahah. The thing's not been fully paved that long, right? I would think that they should be setting records pretty much every year (probably multiple times per day) now that the whole thing is tarmac.

Love the rear wing, shame the car is unfinished in primer gray, I read somewhere the underbody was a development of Dumas's previous car
What an achievement but I'd rather watch Leob go up in his fire breathing, petrol smelling, loud exhaust note Peugeot EV cars are perfectly suited for running at Pikes Peak and the TT, not so good for endurance

Volkswagen I.D. R EV demolishes overall Pikes Peak record
The prototype electric race car beat the previous Pikes Peak Hill Climb record by a full 15 seconds. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volkswagen-idr-electric-pikes-peak-record/ Quote:

I was on top for Thursday practice. The VW did a u-turn to go back downhill over some undulations and it wasn’t hard to see the loads of torsion rigidity this thing has. Of course it also has no doors! Roof hatch only.

Do the batteries re-charge when it runs downhill?

I bet they were using the same tech as Formula E. Costs about $35K a weekend to charge the batteries while hooked up to some sort of super cooler.

**** on electric. It was fossil fuel at some point.
The quickest way to the top is a slingshot or rocket. Everything short of that is simply for entertainment sake. That is to say scratching a specific itch. To that end I suggest gas engines with sexified exhaust notes scratch that itch the best. So what if an electric car gets there faster! It’s not about the fastest way overall, it’s about the fastest within a set of parameters. Those parameters include an internal combustion engine.
