Do you feel like the instruments are a bit...hidden or muddled? Overly subdued maybe? Maybe what i'm getting is they are lost in a big space? Does a 'warm' sounding speaker hide this?

Then again i keep reading Rumours is one of the all time great recordings and much as i love the songs i'm kinda 'meh' on the recording itself.

Agree, I have a pair of SDA SRS 1.2s

they are very efficient @93dB my also very efficient JBL L100s are only 90dB

even though they are efficient the Polks can take lots of power, I used to run them w/ 2x 1000watt amps in a bi-amped configuration, these days in my dotage I use a single 500watt amp

I used burn out the JBLs regularly w/ single 500watt amps

OK ... I'm "ready" ... should I Polk & amp this thread or start another one with my nonsense?

Wouldn't want to go off topic ... again :)

LOL ... I was rereading this thread....

Politics... Audio... Religion ... and a Forum :)

nah, no matter where you post it will derail.

I posted on another forum about my then new tube amps and it derailed into a discussion about "using tube amps is wasting energy and a clear sign of your white privilege".

Let it rip

I watch Paul from PS Audio every morning on YouTube while I have coffee; his viewers are actually mostly pretty civil. A few miscreants want to throw bombs, but for the most part, a gentleman's group of enthusiasts.

ErVikingo 02-17-2025 11:42 AM

paul is a friend

herr_oberst 02-17-2025 11:44 AM

He seems like a really nice person. God knows he works harder than almost anyone half his age.

berettafan 02-17-2025 11:44 AM

His basics videos on room treatment and speaker placement/imaging are immensely helpful.

ErVikingo 02-17-2025 12:22 PM

Paul is a gem for the hobby. He know more than what I have forgotten and he shares knowledge freely on a daily basis. He does his daily videos, his daily posts and is active on their forum. Not to mention audio shows, designs, etc.

He shared a lot of knowledge with me about my speakers. He didn't have to as they are no his current nor prior brand. He likes them though and owns a set!

Great fiction writer also ( I know there is a joke in there ).

Just tossing this out ... I need two SS amps and a pre-amp .... for 2-channel only. Big azz vintage Polks ... need gobs of power. I've used Carver stuff for years.

Prolly a decent DAC too ...

Help a po' Pelican brother out .... any suggestions?

Thanks .... No Thank$ :)?

A couple of questions, two stereo amps used for bi amping or two mono blocks? What do you intend to plug into the pre-amp just DAC /CD or possibly a TT? Is a remote req?

If bi amping I think one really good amp would be a better solution, unless adding in an electronic crossover, and that adds other problems.

Since were all over the shop here I might as well ask before I try to remember my user and password to avsforum.

I have a VMPS large that I’ve been running through a pair of bridged mono GFA-555s. Mostly used for movies.

I recently found the smaller (4 ohm) woofer is causing the amp feeding it to soft clip like crazy and the larger woofer (8 ohm) also needs a bit more grunt.

Anyone have a suggestion for amplification that doesn’t require a second mortgage? I picked up the Adcom’s for about $250 a pop used and they were ok until the new receiver reoptimized the room. Now I need some more electrons.

For movie duty I like receivers. All in one convenience. I do have 2 5 channel amps for movies and a receiver

Likely the clipping problem is the original series Adcom 555 is not rated for 4ohm while bridged mono, the amp actually will see 2ohm load. Switch back to stereo and try. Can try one of the pro amps Crown / Behringer and others for reasonably priced power, possibly slightly noisy amps but worth a try. There are also some reasonably priced class D subwoofer amps out there.

Bridging into 4 ohms is tough on any amp, the effective current for each bridged channel is that of a 2 ohm load as stated above.

These are passive subwoofers you are trying to drive? CrownvXLS series is very good for that application. Pro amps but the fans arnt noticeable, they have consumer inputs and voltages, and adjustable gain. I have an XLS1502 bridged into a 4 ohm 18" ultimax DIY sub (1.6 kW). Puts out way more bass then anything in my house can deal with.

If you have 2 passive subwoofers Id get a bigger XLS series and run each in a non bridged channel though. Its just a better setup and watts are cheap enough in these series.

Otherwise as stated in an earlier post hypex based class d amplifiers for huge power, a bit more expensive and less flexible, but basically SOTA amplification at a reasonable cost. Overkill for sub only maybe. Buckey amplifiers, VTV applifiers, Nord acoustics, apollon amps, there are a dozen or so companies that package these modules into turnkey amps

Cajundaddy 02-18-2025 11:22 AM

Yep, in prosound applications we always use a dedicated amp for each passive sub that is impedance matched to the speaker with a high dampening factor to handle LF energy without stressing the components. We also use a subsonic filter to eliminate subsonic energy that robs amplifier power. This really cleans up the bottom.

VMPS large is two active woofers - I have one amp bridged to each plus a down firing passive.
The 12” is 4ohm.
The 15” is 8ohm.

I’ve had to turn the bass down 10db (from where the audyssey wants it) to tame the clipping and it’s still not happy.

I could bridge the woofers - so 6 ohms - and biamp into both, but I was hoping for a neater solution. I looked the the crown, but my receiver has RCA preamp outputs for the sub.

Crown XLS has RCA input. Possible to adapt the XLR to RCA on other amps

This, and they're not expensive.

Didn’t see that. I’ll go look again. Thx.
