$65-70 thou for a car

Say you had that much to spend for a car...what would you buy?

Why am I asking? On the Bullitt Mustang board, there are complaints of dealerships asking (and getting, evidently)10 to 25 K "additional dealer markup" on the '19 Bullitt Mustang. Base on these is around $52K with not many options listed, since they're pretty loaded to begin with.

I just asked the question if anyone had considered a used supercar instead, since this enters that price category. So far, no responses...

So...what would you buy?

For the record, I'm sticking with what I have. 27,000 miles...it runs great, no problems. Guess the "latest and the greatest" doesn't mean much to me these days.

I’d get a newer BMW motorcycle (I love mine but wouldn’t turn down an opportunity for something a bit newer), a used AMG S and probably have $10k or $15k to put in the bank.

I have a $10 raffle ticket for the Bullit Mustang drawing to be held this November. There are only selling 60k tickets so my chances are great.

But seriously, I would have to really want a car to pay a dealer premium. I think it is a crap move on the dealers part but I guess people are willing to pay.

For sure at that price range used supercars are a real consideration.

If we’re being complete fantasy world here I do like the idea of a white /2 of some sort and a track dog SC or earlier 911 for AX and hill climbs OR a spec Miata with spares, trailer, etc. if I had more $ left after that I’d look into a used luxo cruiser like m5 or even just a nice e class or Lexus LS.

Qualify your question...on a new car or used \ collectible car? Lots of ways to slice this one

Cheap commuter, pay off my CC debt, pay off more of my house.

If I *had* to spend it all on a car, I'd use it to restore my 356.

There's not a Ford (we'll pick on them since the topic is a Mustang) dealer anywhere that wouldn't drop this, and every other over-sticker markup in exchange for selling every single new car at full sticker price.

"But that's outrageous, I'd never pay the sticker price for a car!" says virtually every new car buyer.

If the Monroney isn't sacrosanct it's because of the buying public, not the dealer.

So how then, exactly, is it a crap move?

Sadly on a true “new” car $70k doesn’t buy all that much. How often do you see a new Suburban and think “that’s an expensive car”? But you can spend nearly $100k on a Surburban. No wonder car loans are starting to look like mortgages.

It's a free market economy. If the market is over MSRP, so be it and the dealer comes out ahead. Almost always the market is below a reasonable profit- is that a crap move by the buyers? A dealer is in the business to make a living just like everybody else. Don't begrudge a dealer getting what the market will allow. It wouldn't happen unless, as you said, someone is willing to pay. Supply and demand.

A new GT Mustang, AND a new Ecoboost F150.....done ! Trade in about 3-4 cars for a little bit o relief. I think, however, that buying two new standard issue vehicles on the lot at the same time with cash, would yield about the same results as trading in cars (I.E. trade-ins are giveaways).

I think I'd be finding a used newer Cayman S with PDK and bank the remainder.

It depends upon the planned use of the car. If it was replacing the car that I currently have, then it'd probably be the nicest modern-ish Porsche that I could buy for the money.

Maybe an Austin Healey 3000A if one could be found for that figure. MG TC would be in the hunt, but again prices may have long since eclipsed the 70K mark.

No 70K Ferrari for me as at that price it would be high maintenance.

With that money, you could buy an Original 914/6
