getting nuts out there

My clients call just now and said some man knocked on her door claiming his mother moved into the neighborhood a few blocks away over couple months ago and like to meet her. How fooking crazy is that? What, no one lives on her street and have to venture out blocks looking for friends?

She's an older, widow, about 60 doing major renovation to the house. Lives in the only bedroom and bath (soon to be demo) looking for a rental until project finishes. This fooking dumb ass must be casing the house? I am setting up camera for her tomorrow. I like this lady a lot. She's a real sweet heart and hate to see anything happen to her.

Something similar happened recently to my wife's sister's employer's house. Some older well dressed gal tried to gain entry by poising to know the owner. She was turned away after the boss answered the door.

The next day she attempted entry at the rear of the neighbor's house. These owners were on vacation and the surveillance camera triggered the alarm on the owner's cell phone.

Since I installed the Blink camera system it has been extremely rewarding seeing whoever approaches the house or backyard. Mostly it is coyotes, rabbits, cats and the occasional person. Fortunately no breakins though. For less than $300 cdn you can get a decent system. Worth the peace of mind.

My parents put their house up for sale a few years ago. Someone knocked on the door asking to see it, my mother, being the always trusting of everyone person she is, gave him a tour.

She told him after the tour she was leaving for work and to call the realtor on the sign if he wants to make an offer.. See where this is going?

She came home from work to a busted in back door and robbed house.

When she told me the story I just face palmed.

The house is pretty much ripped up with boards over some of the windows. Maybe he's after our tools and equip. She insist on staying for as long as she can until we take out the last bath. For her safety, I am going to have her move out very soon. How dumb can these bad guys be? They should know that people have already seen their faces and many places now have camera.

You need an under-fed, nasty-ass dog to watch the premises.

I have a couple of well fed ones that are a little bit protective of the wife. The tall one looks like something would be strapped to a paratrooper's chest going out the back of a C-130

I don't care about our equip. They can have it if they want it that badly that they have to steal it. I am more concern about her safety of on going problems with these low lifes

Had a dog that was a nice as it could be. As a game I trained it to show it's teeth, snarl, and snap when I made a fist. We took her for walks and the neighborhood kids would come up and ask is she bites. We would say well...I don't know....and make a fist. She would snarl, and show her teeth. Then We'd say, well better not try to get too close. Scared the kids, she tought it fun game.

Also made a game of barking like all heck was breaking loose when anyone came to the front door or snooped around the house.

She was a great dog.

We also put steel doors on our house.

Have since moved from that neighborhood. Now my next door neighbor leaves his garage overhead door open, all the time. Figure our house is pretty safe because of the wide open garage full of stuff next door.

That's a bad story but it could have been worse, at least he did not try to harm your mother. Hopefully she is more careful now.

My mother could have fallen for the same thing at one time, she was intelligent but from another era when people left doors unlocked, etc.

Chain link job fence. Almost all jobs around here are fenced if no one lives there at the time of the reno.

The Blink system looks good.
Add motion activated lights, prominent signs saying "under internet video surveillance", maybe motion activated fake dog barking inside(they have doorbells).
Something to show there is a system in place even before they get to the door.

Fence is going up as soon as she leaves. very difficult to find short term rental nearby. She works downtown. There is nothing for rent around here.

Send a message via AIM to vash
cracks me up everytime someone suggest a dog for security.

it is a seriously good suggestion for someone that wants and can have a dog.

it is a retarded suggestion for someone that isnt.

i vote for rented temporary construction fencing. and good lighting.
