Connections

James Burke's Connections, a brilliant documentary exploring causality through history. Grew up on it, loved it. Found it again here, someone put them up in a google drive. Quality isn't great but you can learn Spanish while watching. The late 70s leisurewear is fantastic as well.

Loved that show. I does indeed make you think. In fact, while driving past Stanford University recently, I realized that Silicon Valley wouldn't exist if not for typhoid fever. Leland founded the university in 1891 in honor of his son, Leland Junior, who died of typhoid fever at the age of 15. He was their only child. Leland Senior said "the children of California shall be our children."

The first high tech companies in the area, such as HP and Varian, were founded by Stanford grads with the encouragement of Fred Terman, a professor at Stanford. I immediately thought of James Burke. He could have made an episode on this.

I loved the show as well. When I was working on my Electrical Engineering degree at Ga Tech, the book was actually used as a textbook for an elective class in one of the other engineering schools (maybe Industrial?)

I loved the show, and I bought the companion book. I used to have all the episodes recorded on VHS. Threw them away when I trashed my last VCR.

The DVD set is available.

Greatest history documentary I have ever seen.

Shocking that he was only about age 40 when he filmed the first season.
The guy is still around.

It's all online in English.

I don't remember the details of the episode, as I haven't seen it in 30 years, but I do remember being blown away by an episode about clocks.
