Anyone know if there is a market for used medical equipment?

I just toured a neighbors warehouse, he has the building for sale and will eventually empty it. This place is filled with most every medical device imaginable. He has hundreds of electronics, Hill Rom bed parts (motors and jackshafts) some rehab pieces for serious recovery, IV stands and about 300 chairs (waiting room, conference room, office......) and millions of 10ml glass bottles.

He has rented out some items in the past for movie productions, the girls running the place are only using Craigs List and this place isn't moving a lot of junk.

I'm picking up some stuff for myself but he'll give me a fee for any connections I can pass on.

I'm going back tomorrow weather permitting to measure out some pallet shelving for my shop.

Located near Charlotte N.C.

I know a medical prop house in Atlanta that might be interested in some pieces depending on condition. Does your friend have pictures?

Nursing homes will buy used equipment but hospitals don't. Hospitals have enough of there own used crap they don't need to buy more. BTW, I work at a hospital.

He can call these guys: Buy & Sell Used Medical Equipment and Hospital Liquidations

The prop house in ATL would be interested in the patient/ lobby seating if it's in good condition. PM me and let me know if you can get pictures.

^^^^^ Too far inland, but that would have been sweet and easy.

I'll be going there maybe tomorrow and can take some pictures. Most is in excellent condition and from a casual observer all appears to be from recent to maybe 10 years old. I'll load them up on my photobucket account.

The bottles are a real issue for him, 5 million on pallets take up a lot of room, trying to figure out if they can be repurposed in some kind of crafts application.

Thanks - Terry

Not directly related but 6 years ago before Sandy hit, a friend had sent his 42’ Fountain boat for a repower (about $40,000) at the end of the season.

After Sandy, he got a call from the shop which was not directly on the water. He was told his boat was fine, work would resume shortly. It wasn’t the news he was hoping for.

Not sure how well insurance might pay on what is likely a hoarder's cache of obsolete stuff.

Dr's without borders and other volunteer orginations go to offer health care in areas have very little equipment or medicines.

Once your friend sells what he can, he might contact some of those groups to see what they can use.

Cheers Richard

Doesn't look like a hoarders mess, just a lot of stuff.

Richard, good idea, I mentioned to him maybe donating some of the specialized wheelchairs and equipment to someone in need and maybe get some tax relief.
Groups like doctors without borders helping other third world countries could use our surplus that is better than no equipment.

Ebay
A few years back I listed an electronic bone strengthner for auction.
I was very surprised at the volume of bidding. The thing went for twice what I estimated.
If the items are large...Craigslist.

Hi Steve, I have to travel in a few weeks and not sure how long I'll be gone. I will take a few samples of items see if they are Ebayable (new word) and if he has no luck in liquidating will set up shop there and help him move out what I can that route.
The office girls are using CL for some larger items like refridgerators, stainless kitchen equipment and some chairs.

This seems to be their only outlet and are not the sharpest at marketing.

From the perspective of a doctor's office and surgery center, we have definitely purchased equipment off eBay before. But from a shipping standpoint, it obviously isn't a big deal to do so for stuff that'll fit into a box. It's another matter for whole hospital beds or furniture.

There is a robust market for used medical equipment for sale in the developing world. Even they don't take obsolete or broken stuff, but things that are merely outdated in the US are in demand in developing countries. I used to know some medical brokers but I haven't had contact with any for years.

Ebay is a good first start because both US and international buyers will have the ability to bid. You might try China's version of eBay. https://www.howchina.cn/chinese-ebay-auctions-website-in-english-china-guide/

Googling used medical equipment brokers should get you someone who would be willing to inventory what survives Ebay and make an offer.

The office and lobby furniture probably has no value. There are so many warehouses full of used office furniture that it's hard to get someone to just take the stuff, let alone buy it. But, you should review it for mid-century modern lobby pieces. When I was a kid my dad brought home some old couches and chairs from the hospital he worked at and we used them in the basement. I thought they were weird looking and reeked of old hospital decor, circa 1970. Fast forward a couple of decades and they turned out to be some fancy mid century designer's work who came back in fashion in this century. My recollection was that there was a lot of that type of lobby furniture in hospitals of that era. You never know, you may get lucky and find some stuff that's now collectible. But a stack of generic office chairs, desks, and lobby couches will be landfill material.
