Where would I go to volunteer my services for Hurricane relieif ?

I'm not trying to make myself sound like a hero. There are plenty others who get to wear that badge. I just like to work , and help out when the times call for it. It may sound weird, but I enjoy demo type work, and cleaning up debris. I've been waiting my whole life for a chance to do this.
I may end up working on my buds place, depending on how hard he got hit, or if he is even still standing . If he is still intact, I will offer my back somewhere else, wherever it is needed. Ill camp , and not take up any hotel rooms if I have to .
The instant the roads are open to the outer banks, my truck is headed south.
This was to be a family vacation, but I want to go, and help clean up instead.
Where would be the best place for me to go, or link up with some organization , where I could volunteer?
I was thinking about showing up on the doorstep. of either the police station, or the fire station. and saying " here I am , my work boots are on, where do you want me?"
The red cross? Vinny? , any ideas? I've still got a strong back and can go for 12 hours on a good day .
Depending how this plays out, I plan on loading up with a bunch of tools, and hauling in a truck bed full of water, and maybe some extra diesel .

Also, if you or a friend is affiliated with a church, see if they are working with a local church for disaster relief.

Other options but getting there and assessing the situation will be key.

Some poor guy in Pa had a big branch fall on his truck....maybe you could help him in the meantime?

I would call ahead to the local city hall, Fred. They would be able to direct you to the right folks.

Or you could just drive in and play it by ear.

Very bad idea.
Been there on the receiving side. You get up in the morning with instructions to get specific things done and find yourself with 12 people from out of nowhere standing around wanting something to do. If go ahead with your planned day you piss them off, if you take time to assess their skills, find a job for them, assign them, make sure they have tools, etc your planned day is shot and your supervisors want to know why you didn't get your work done.
Definitely call ahead so you can arrive where you are needed and expected.
Or send money.

When Houston got hit hard, our church contacted a church in Houston and asked how we could help.
We sent $$$ first and then some of us went down there and helped whoever the local church said needed help as much as we could.
Mostly it was moving and distributing supplies and cleaning up what we could.

Nothing can make a person feel more insignificant than seeing so much that needs to be done and knowing you can't even make a dent.

I commend you for your willingness to help others who are down on their luck. Job/family/farm responsabilities keep me from doing this now, but I can see myself doing this in retirement also....Good on you !

My friend who owns the house down there, just messaged me and he is also staying. No way off the island now. He is a good egg too. He is helping his neighbors storm proof their places . He sent some videos of waves crashing over the dunes already. There is water about 100 feet from his house as we speak
Thanks ! Another Pelican who lives in the area has been messaging me , letting me know the conditions as they unfold also. He is staying as well.
