the art of packing luggage.
jeebus!
i damn near wasted my entire weekend watching yammerer after yammerer talking on youtube on how to do it. i have 3 months of travel coming up and i need to streamline. i bought a badass travel pack. (Mystery Ranch "mission rover")..no roller bags for me. i hate them (for now). a cobble stone sidewalk in some italian town - game over. my bag will fit in overhead compartments. the big take away from youtube? PACKING CUBES! i never even knew these things existed. it always amazed me my friends that travel for work, seem so laid back when it came to getting gear together. me? it is like a yard sale. this is for work travel. i got my mojo down for international travel. i just go light. work travel, i always have crap i never use which equals crap i didnt need to bring. so packing cubes and a new toiletry-bag system.. off to AMAZON! any tips you grizzled season work travelers? TSA precheck..!! i gotta do that!

Vacuum bags packing. Of course you need a good source of a vacuum, and packing a vacuum cleaner kinda defeats the purpose of packing tight.
I have taken over a dozen two week trips with my wife, in the 911. Packing all the 911 with two weeks of clothes, tools and "stuff" is a challenge. We had to have three nights of nice clothes as well as casual. Packing for international travel is a different animal all together. My business partner whent on a two week trip to Italy with he girlfriend. They both took just one bag that would fit in the carry on bin. Wash and hang dry the underwear, no fancy clothes, just presentable. Wash the undies and shirts in the sink each day. Hang up to dry.

Have had good luck with the Tom Bihn stuff for helping with organization. I think the Aeronaut 45 is my next bag from them.
https://www.tombihn.com/ EDIT: and if I really want to go minmalist, maybe I'll give the Aeronaut 30 a spin

TSA precheck and Global Entry will keep you somewhat sane. I also recommend Clear--but if you'll be traveling abroad it won't help much. I also think you should reconsider your roller bag situation as there are multiple brands w/heavy-duty wheels that swivel and can take on the cobblestone streets of Italy. You can always pick it up when you need to.
Packing cubes are great--I just usually pare down what I travel with and make sure reuse is always an option--easy-clean slacks, etc. My must-haves (beyond my dopp kit of course) are running gear, dry-fit shirts, and fresh underwear and socks for each day. Everything else you need to have close to you can go in your backpack--including electronics, snacks, water bottle, etc.

Int'l ? Global entry. TSA-Precheck is nice, but US immigration lines are worse everyday, and global entry means you zip by in 5 minutes...

Great thread, Cliff. We travel internationally at least twice per year, and my wife is always complaining that we overpack. We have the silk underwear that packs smaller and can be washed every night. But the rest of our packing needs help. Our perfect world for 2-3 week travel would be a carry on in the overhead bin and a small bag under the seat. We’re still checking luggage, which sucks. I’m looking forward to advice from the more seasoned travelers.
Global Entry rocks!

Buy clothes when you get there, and donate them before you leave.
Seriously though, the crap my wife brings that she thinks she will "NEED" never is needed, and makes packing much more of a chore. I roll socks/underwear, cotton shirts into tight circles with rubber bands. The toiletry bag doesn't need half of the items most people take. I use the hotel soap/shampoo, or steal a few samples for the next destination if they won't be available. I try to carry a small personal bag onto the airplane that has trip snacks, a change of skivvies/shirt, and a magazine, or kindle....you never know when your bag will have to be checked at the last minute because of limited overhead storage (idiots in front of you stowing their coats, and briefcases). |

Three months!? I couldn't do it. I get worried being gone for a week and having long grass when I get home.
The most I've ever done is two weeks. The most I've ever done as an adult is one week. The last time I travelled for work was 2015.

My wife and I have gotten to where we can travel for 2-4 weeks out of a medium 25" suitcase each. We just plan to wash a few clothes along the way. If it wasn't for going to fine restaurants along the way, we could travel lighter.

TSA Precheck and Global Entry are awesome. Clear is also nice but not essential.
I do Navy style, roll everything up. I also pack light, just got home from a week in the UK for business and only used a standard sized roller bag that I can carry on. I try to wear things like jeans a few times, and if I'm staying longer I'll just do laundry. Never check your bags! You'll be at the airport for an extra hour to check, and extra 30 min for baggage claim, and if you have a late change in flight you are screwed. Also, pick an airline, get their loyalty program, and stick with that airline only. Once you get some amount of status life gets way easier. Same goes for the hotel and rental car. The bonus is that after three straight months worth of travel, you'll probably have enough miles and credits that you and the wife can take a nice vacation for free.

Place good shirts individually in supermarket plastic bags. Don't know how or why but it really does reduce creases and the need to iron. Also I bring a length string to do an extra line of laundry to hang in the bathroom. Beats the hell out of paying for laundry and the drama of getting only half of it back.

My problem with carry on - never enough overhead space. And I like having a pocket knife.
