Cutting the cords *relief*

Would have done this a long time ago but I've been too lazy. Finding myself with a little extra time.

Getting rid of cable that I don't watch, "land lines" that I don't need, and simplified my network of Wifi Range extenders to simple Google Mesh in the house. Ahhh.... Literally have boxes of misc equipment that are going away. So nice.

Got Amazon Fire TV and Hulu subscription. Nothing lost.

chromecast is fun to play with also. Right now I'm casting live music from "green room" (bar in key west) to TV.

Can also cast youtube videos easily. Last night we were watching old Johnny Carsons, and You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx

I bought a 20' HDMI cable so I can watch stuff from my laptop on the 55" TV I also picked up a cheap hdtv antenna so I can watch local TV stations. Don't need to pay for cable.

Good point GWN7, according to this, you can get about 20 HD broadcast channels for free.

I don’t mind paying for what I use. ..but I was paying for a lot of crap I don’t. Cutting my monthly bill in half and not losing anything.

I'd love to get out of paying Direct TV for channels I never use. However according to that FCC website and some other similar sites I've investigated, where I live where I live only five channels are available with only weak reception. In this area only satellite is available. I'm thinking I'll have to wait another couple of decades.

You have internet, obviously... Subscribe to a few select services that contain them?

We can get away with only Hulu ($7/month) and two Amazon season passes for $70/year

My prior bill was $300/month for cable, internet, and phone and equipment. Now down to $90 for internet, $20/month for services and a one time purchase of $200 for some equipment (cable modem and a VOIP phone)....

For $99 you can get a tuner that lets you have any two over-the-air channels at a time on your local network on a computer any of the streaming TV boxes.

Hulu and netflix gets you about everything else except local channels..

I really miss Sony's Bravia movie rentals, they had everything all the other pay per view thing had, were $1 cheaper, and no fee for the service except for having a Sony smart TV. Then they rolled it into that Play Station service and it started sucking.

The only thing I have not been able to watch is F1. You have to get a subscription service to get enough of the ESPN channels or access to SkySports to watch. They are talking about adding F! as it's own streaming service, but can't imagine it being affordable or very good unless they use the SkySports feed like ESPN.

It depends on where you live and the size of the antenna what channels you can pick up with one.

I used to pay my cable company $120 a month for TV and it was crap. It will be 3 years next month I cut the cord. (36 X $120 = $4320) I've saved by doing so.

We are moving towards this, but I'm not a fan of most streaming services. We just tried Directv Now and the user interface sucks. It's very slow and there's not channel numbers, so you can't jump to what you want to watch. Most of the other options don't have the channels that we actually watch, so that pretty much defeats the purpose.

All of this crap making the TV, and multiple remotes even more difficult to operate. My wife is a big technology, TV junky that she embraces with enthusiasm. I, on the other hand, think we would do just fine with no cable at all. She is paying for cable/internet, hulu, netflix, and has a list of weekly shows that she needs to watch, pretty much cock blocking me from watching anything I want, and trying to figure out how to get the system back to cable TV so I can watch a football game on a network. She is also a fan of the firestick.

It seems like any streaming service that we try starts the show out with a choppy/buffering bit that annoys me to the point that I leave the room.

Some may not know this but there are 2 versions of Hulu . There is what I call Hulu light which generally is $7.00 a month . Minimal live programming but the ability to watch shows that aired as recently as 24 hours previously . We have had that service for aprox. 2 years along with Sling . Aprox. 3 weeks ago we dropped Sling and Hulu light and signed up for Hulu Live which is 39.99 a month . We get over 60 channels including local which we didn't get with Sling . No extra money/packages to get ABC/CBS/NBC . We also get a full variety of sports programming so both myself and the wife are happy . The channel selector/user interface is much different than cable but very easy to get use to . So our electronic entertainment budget is 39.99 for Sling Live and internet access that's it . Our internet is DSL via Windstream and while it is not lightning fast it is fast enough for streaming with very little buffering . We are very happy with what we have now .

Moved everything to my AppleTV. Gives me access to most all the sevices, Hulu, Netflix, DirectTV, etc, etc. AND controls my TV and Stereo volume/on/off so only ONE remote. Can also watch my computer with it.

Even though I subscribe, I watch stuff using Kodi because there are zero commercials. Gotten to where I will fall asleep if there is a commercial break.

I have been given permission to do the same. When my wife moved in, she insisted that we get cable - I had never subscribed before. The TV portion of our bill has been steadily climbing, and is now almost $180, and most of what she actually watches could be obtained via a digital antenna. It seems like every other channel is just an infomercial.

That seems only marginally better - if at all - than normal cable.

Good to get rid of stuff and declutter for sure although I’d deliberately get rid of ANYTHING made by or connected to Google...

We cut the cord 11 years ago. Then again, we get 51 OTA channels that we don't watch. We do have Prime and Netflix but don't watch those much either. We will watch DDD on FoodTV streaming while we eat supper. Sometimes the Animal shows now and then. We spend more time racing or flying against each other or other coop play on the computers than watching TV.

We do have an HTPC for when we do buy a movie or TV series. We also have a projector for our indoor target range with the Laserlyte inserts and use the program ShootOff for drills. Great for trigger control.

Yeah, when will we ever get to an à la carte cable TV service? Until then, no cable TV, just Internet service with Amazon Prime & Netlifix in my house.

Well the deed is done.

Returned all equipment. - $70/month in ridiculous ffees. Bought a $60 cable modem off Amazon which will break even in 6 months. No phones. No cable.

Fire TV with Netflix and Hulu. Done and done.

Total savings? $200/month.
