You all ever eat these?

Cactus pear. Difficult to draw any flavor parallels.

Delicious. Sold on the streets in Spain when I was stationed there with the Navy. Difficult to find in NC. The ones that I have seen growing around here are much smaller than the Spanish ones.

I bought these. 79cent a lb. I want to knock on some doors to see if folks would let me pick some. I see thousands go to waste.

I imagine the seeds will assist in the southern plumbing regions

I first had a taste of one in SEAR school in California. There, of course, are a protected plant and all i could do is stare at them after not eating for 5 days. Finally, one of the instructors brought a commercial version in and passed around a small taste to all. Bloody wonderful, but i was a little biased.

Is that where they teach you how to grill a steak, but don't let you eat it?

Catch the critter, kill and process the critter, build a fire, cook the critter all without being spotted by the chasers, but they still ain't allowed to eat the critter

That looks like some nice ones there Vash!

I think they require just the right conditions to make good fruit. Dry enough for the cactus to grow well then wet enough in fruit season for it to plump out nicely.

I have had some really nice fruit from Kohala on the Big Island, delicious.

There is lots of it growing on my Sister's place in Az, but the fruit is small and doesn't develope well. Edible but not worth the effort.

Cheers Richard

Interesting. I seem them in the stores around here all of the time, but I've never had one. I've always been curious. I often pick of weird fruit at the grocery store to try, but never one of those.

I've always wanted to try a breadfruit or jackfruit, but due to their size, they are a little daunting. I'd hate to buy something the size of a pretty big watermelon to try o realize that I don't want it after a bite or two.

That looks like a cousin to dragon fruit. I never had a good dragon fruit though.

Both the red ones and the more plentiful yellow ones grow all over upcountry Maui (and throughout Hawaii). Pretty good when refrigerated ... but you need to handle them with leather gloves until you've washed off the fiberglass-like mini bristles emanating from each "eye" ..
