I need a new DD...but nothing excites me.

Like most of you I have owned my fair share of vehicles. Trucks, SUV's, Sport sedans and Sporty cars. I'm really over Sedans/coupes in general. I like to get into the back country from time to time and the overall poor conditions of our roads these days just makes a Sedan painful to drive.

SUV's are what I enjoy and find practical but in the $30K or less arena (all I'm willing to spend on a DD) not many speak to me. V8 or Turbo 6/8 cyl is what I want cuz it's hard to live with less than 300/350 hp is a vehicle that heavy. I've been tempted by a used Range Rover Sport but really know better with my budget. Only thing that makes sense to me is a Grand Cherokee WK2 with a Hemi....very nice ride but having a hard time getting excited about it.

Currently really considering another truck. My issue here is they have gotten so BIG! When I was a much younger man livin in TX a short bed 4X4 (I don't need to add standard cab because that's all they built back then) truck was the $hit... I'm thinking that may be the ticket to come full circle. I would really like to find an F150 standard cab short bed 4X4 with the 5.0. So far all the local ones are the XL package so pretty bare bones. Who knows...the search continues....

As always, your thoughts, suggestion, feedback are welcome!

M

Used 2011-2015 Cayenne S or Turbo!

Not as exciting as a 911, but you did say SUV...

Biased here.

Here's a fun game. Go on your local Craigslist and try to find a standard cab shortbed with an 8-cylinder engine in under 2 minutes. You'll fail. Go back and limit your search to red trucks. You'll find several in under a minute.

A friend just picked up an extended cab, short box F150 (6.5' bed) with the 5.0L V8, he loves it, and it pulls his race car (2003 Mustang Cobra 700HP) on a 20' car trailer with ease, and is very comfortable while doing it.

What I would look for if I were in your situation is the new 2020 Ford Bronco/Ranger pickup that will be coming out shortly. Looks real cool, and sort of retro.

Order one. You'll be surprised how low you can a single cab long or short box. Especially without the premium that the diesel engines hold.v

I'm really considering this... I haven't bought a new vehicle since 1985. Maybe it's time.

I recently got a low mileage 2010 Cayenne GTS with PDCC. The Cayenne suits your needs well and within you price range. I test drove it without any expectations and came away surprised at how well a SUV could drive. I have never had anything but sports coupes to this point, probably won't be going back to one as a DD.

Mike, I feel your pain but from a different pov. I'm looking for a DD but am not a truck or SUV fan. Nothing excites me.

Jim, is this because we have owned everything (we can afford) that excited us, sometimes twice? I think this is part of my problem.

I have also strongly considered a 957 S or GTS. I really like the looks of it, always have. The 2011 and later really don't work for me visually. Maybe I should revisit this idea but most have over 100K these days.

Both those Fords are good looking trucks, first one a bit Hot Wheels lookin' though

ABQ you will want a turbo, won't lose as much with the high altitude

I have never driven one but saw a few of the Canyon/Colorado mid sized pick-ups on the interstate yesterday.

They look great in my mind, much better in person than in print.

No idea concerning performance.

Newer Durango if the Jeep is a bit small? Not as capable off road as the GC, but still does pretty well.

I think the first response pretty much nailed it. Fun to drive, off road capable, right in your price range. Though I prefer the GTS personally.

Eric made a great point here a few years ago about mid-sized pickups. They cost too much for what you get compared to the full size trucks.
Toyota is really bad. I was at the Toyota dealer a few weeks ago and took these pics of a Taco.

Nice truck, but a nice Tundra was outside for $37k.

The Chevy prices do seem to reflect the difference in size better.

Those Toyotas have a cult following and price reflects that niche.
they're also not big inside. Rode some trails in a new taco, and one of those 4dr jeeps. Very cramped.
The full size trucks are spacious.
