Questions:

1. What's an LVL?

2. What kind of roof are you going to have? Metal?

Looking forward to the update when you tie it into your existing roof!

Have fun! :)

LVL..........laminated veneer lumber

rfuerst911sc 04-21-2019 05:10 AM

Paul you are making good progress for a one man army :D I am all too familiar with the 500 times up and down on the scaffolding  I can't wrap my head around how you are going to tie into the existing roof so looking forward to additional updates .

Looks great Paul, going up and down ladders and scaffolds is hard work, take it easy!

URY914 04-21-2019 02:06 PM

Thanks everyone. I keep an aluminum step ladder next to the scaffold so I don't have to climb up the ends of the scaffold. It really helps.

Roof will be asphalt shingles to match the existing roof.

I need to tie into the ridge line of the existing roof on the left. The pitch is about a 2 in 12 so it is pretty flat which means it's a long way from the edge of the roof to the end of the ridge beam. There's a few ways to do this. I could leave the existing roof and deck and build on top of it or tear it all off and frame it all new. Or a combination of the two which I intend to do.

I'll remove enough shingles to locate the ridge beam and pull a string line out to the addition. I'll also remove some of the decking to get to the ridge beam so I can check that my new beam is being set level. Sounds easy don't it? Wish me luck....

June 2 Update:

Wood, wood everywhere there's wood.

Rafter framing had started and I've tied into the existing roof and extending out onto the addition. This work is slow going. Measure, measure and measure again before cutting 2x6x16. The angles can be tricky to keep straight in your head. I've been measuring ridge and valleys using three different tools and sometimes will cut a pattern out of a scarp piece of wood. Here where I am now.........

Here is the tie-in to the existing roof.

Looks like great progress Paul , I am assuming hotter than hell in FL right now ? Slow and steady wins the race

URY914 06-02-2019 02:39 PM

The rafters are 2x6's but I had to cut a "bird's mouth" or notch to match the existing roof line. Due to this my engineer wants me to add a 2x4x8 to the 2x6. I have a 42" overhang so the extra 2x4 is needed.

I haven't updated you in awhile but here is a pic of the latest progress. This pic is a few weeks old but the plywood roof decking is about 95% as of yesterday. The areas that are open n this shot have all be covered now.

Looks good Paul do you have a tarp to cover ahead of hurricane rains heading your way ?

URY914 09-01-2019 05:44 AM

Big event yesterday was that I fell off the ladder I was only a few rungs up but I fell hard on my left side. Blacked out and can't remember the details. I was able to get up and get inside the house. Told wife to call 9-1-1. They checked me out and my wife and daughter took me to the ER at the hospital where I work. We called ahead (always good to be friends with the President of the hospital). They had a team waiting for us. Had x-rays and a CT scan. No stitches needed, no broken bones. Just sore as hell and cuts and scrapes. Concussion probably. Very lucky. SmileWavy

rfuerst911sc 09-01-2019 05:51 AM

Dude you gotta be careful !!! Sure glad no major injuries but pay attention to concussion symptoms .

My upper body is very sore and left arm in a sling. I got a few guys coming over today to tighten things up for me.

A mans got to know his limitations.....

One of my neighbors was hit by another cyclist and concussed quite badly.
It has been a month and she still is not back to work.
She also works in heath care. Talked to her the other day and she is missing her bike riding but taking the recovery very seriously.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Racerbvd 09-01-2019 05:16 PM

Did you get it buttoned up??

Baz 09-01-2019 06:20 PM

Sorry to hear of your fall, Paul. :(

Obviously a warning for you to be more careful.

Working in this heat and humidity takes a heavy toll on the mind and when doing stuff like you're doing you have to take breaks - lots of them.

Sorry if I'm off base - just sharing my thoughts, FWIW, from someone who has BTDT.

I has a ladder incident last year - the ladder actually fell down while I was about 2/3 up (it was a 16' extension not extended at the time) and I landed on top of the ladder right on my buttocks. Huge bruise and very sore butt - but luckily no other issues. Could have been a lot worse and I took it as a sign to realign my precautionary measures.

Hope your friends get you all buttoned up. In this area I think the worse two days will be Tues. and Wed.

Your project is coming along - thanks for sharing the really great pics - good luck, bruddah!

Last week I got the roof decking finished and got it inspected. Here it is naked...

Last weekend I sprayed the siding plywood with bleach and started installing the house wrap. I'll wrap the walls top to bottom.

Roof was started Thursday and finished up today. Here it is....

Got a roof on it just in time. There's a storm headed our way tomorrow and we are due to get a couple of inches of rain.

rfuerst911sc 10-19-2019 01:33 AM

Getting the roof 100 % done is a huge step congrats it is looking good . Sounds like you are feeling better good to hear . Yeah it's supposed to rain here for four days straight starting today . Keep the update pics coming .

Nice job!

All those roof angles and cuts are hard work.

Thanks. I've got valleys running to two directions. If I hadn't had wanted the corner to be an interior corner I'd only have 1 valley and much easier.

URY914 10-20-2019 11:22 AM

Roof and wrapped. I'll install the door and window next weekend.

Paul, sorry to read about your fall, not sure how I missed that, great to see some progress, you must be very pleased to be back into it

You're carpentry skills are outstanding, doesn't look an easy roof but you sure nailed it

Glad to see your build is weather proofed

astrochex 10-20-2019 12:17 PM

Looks great, Paul. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

URY914 10-20-2019 03:46 PM

Thanks to everyone for asking about my fall but I was back at work within a few days. I do have a new rule- my wife has to be watching me when I'm going up/down the ladder. I still don't remember falling, getting up, or walking in the house. I have a very faint memory of laying on the ground. I had a concussion so I took it pretty easy for awhile.

URY914 10-26-2019 04:44 AM

I ordered my door and window. Nothing special, 36 x 80" door, 35 days for delivery.Window 36 x 48", 28 days delivery.

Order early, my friends....

rfuerst911sc 10-26-2019 04:50 AM

When I built my man cave garage before I framed the windows and entry door I went to a local surplus warehouse and purchased . Got them home then framed accordingly . I can't imagine being so close and having to wait for the delivery. The build is coming along nicely .

URY914 12-15-2019 05:45 PM

Overdue Update;

I've had electricians working for the last 4 days. I'm adding a 60 amp sub-panel. This will have everything in the garage fed from it. I had them add a 30 amp dedicated receptical for my welding machine and also a pull down extension cord on a reel. There will be 8 total outlets and I'm having 4 8' LED light fixtures being mounted to the ceiling joists.

I have the door and window now but haven't been in hurry to install them. I've been trying to address some of the existing conditions of the original utility room. It has 1/4" masonite on the walls and it in pretty rough shape. I'm pulling it off and cleaning up some of the wall framing. I'm adding shelving up high to store big bulking items like coolers and other gear. The plan it to keep as much as I can off the floor or if it is have it on wheels. Drill press, chop saw, welder, table saw- all on carts.

I'm doing my best to get it dried in and inspected by the end of the year so I can get out of my storage unit. But I'm missed every self imposed deadline so far so I can always wish for it. More later.....SmileWavy

rfuerst911sc 01-01-2020 04:12 AM

Looking good Paul , you are getting near the finish line 😀 What are your plans for finished walls and ceiling ? That Florida sun/heat can be brutal through the roof as you well know . Keep the updates coming and happy New year 😊

Racerbvd 01-01-2020 05:43 AM

Looking good Paul, when is the reveal party?

URY914 01-01-2020 01:18 PM

The interior walls will be 1/2" plywood for the first 48" with F-glass batt insulation behind it. Ceiling will also have insulation and drywall.

Those 8' LED lights make it as bright as a football stadium.
