Honestly, I don't get the fixation many buyers have about mileage. Rather have a well sorted car like this at 118k miles than a garage queen with all the maintenance to come:
Cooling system complete $1500
Suspension reinforcement $1000
Leaks $700
Bushings $1500

Techno 4 door 5 speed, rare, Dinan upgrades nice and black not Dove interior all for $20k (maybe) seems like a lot of car for the money.

Mine finally arrived, MUCH nicer than I was expecting, a beast on the road. Comes stock with sport seats, LSD, dead pedal and one touch windows, keyless entry.

Give it a few years.
E46 is a legend, and it's becoming harder and harder to find non-trashed ones.
At some point, you will see a non-M low mileage unicorn E46 sell for big money on BAT.
Just like the ones that came before it.

speeder, i like your analysis. But, have you driven an E46?
You should test drive at least one before dismissing the entire gen.

Combination of issues, the final straw being that the local dealer decided to close a tool or something on the e92 leaving a nice dent under the hood and cracking the paint and refused to own up to it or fix it. The brand just doesn't have the customer service it used to.

It also has had $20k in work in the last year, a big chunk of which I don't believe was needed because they didn't diagnose it right (replaced the transmission for $16k and the errors came back within a couple months). A new battery and ground cable w/meter in it seemed to solve a lot of that, for merely another $1k, because of having to code the battery, etc. Oh, I also bought this one specifically because it had a replacement motor under warranty already...

Once I have time to get the hood fixed (my insurance is also being a pita), and the throttle actuator replaced (rebuilt it but it still acts up), it's going to the consignment dealer. It's probably going to be an excellent car for somebody now that I've been through the pain and every known weak point has been fixed.

The e46 has been a great car, I've had it 12+ years, and the worst thing was the subframe. It's currently at the consignment shop to get the interior touched up and sold. I originally was going to replace it with the e92, but had to keep it because the e92 needed so much sorting.

If I spent 16k to replace a transmission and the problem came back, I'd probably sue the dealer. I'd definitely sue him for the hood damage.

I gave up on BMW years ago. Never another.

Yep. That is not an insignificant amount of $$ to flush down the toilet. If it was $1600, I'd want my $$ back.

After the 911 got too valuable to play on the track, I built a e36 track toy (although I haven't had time to track it)

Started with a 97 318is, my local BMW dismantler supplied me with a full M3 suspension (thanks to drift kids wrecking them). The M60 4.0 motor came from a 740IL and 6 speed tranny from a 540 sport. Brakes are 996 brembo on e46 m3 rotors (bolt on kit). Its a hoot to drive.

Next bad idea has been the supercharged m62 4.4 I've been building for the last year. It goes in this weekend.

Very cool, I had an XJR so that’s familiar looking.

That looks like a lot of ambition and effort. What compelled you to choose that set up for power?

Pretty awesome setup there.
On a totally unrelated subject, I have always wanted to ask you if you are any relation to Andy Helgesen. I autocrossed, and did Porsche club events with him quite a bit when I was new to the hobby. Super nice guy. At one time, we had matching cobalt blue 944's .
Same last name, and a passion for Porsche. I was always curious.
Love the big motor e 36..

I sort of did the same thing. Here's our E36 car at Road Atlanta two weeks ago:
