Loving the longer days. Cool mornings here but generally nice during the day. It's been a rainy winter with lots of "cart path only" days. Here's a beautiful sunrise out back a couple of days ago.

Almost 3 minutes more daylight each day here.
Nice to see...

I've always found the solstice to be ironic. First day of winter the days start getting longer, first day of summer they start getting shorter. Living on the floor of a valley as I do our temps tend to be colder than outside of the valley. Supposed to bounce around 0 F this weekend, but only over night.

Yeah, but that's not how it works, of course. The hottest part of the day isn't noon. The heat added each day continues to get added after noon (same goes for summer after the solstice) so the hottest part of the day is usually more like 3-5pm. Summer/day and winter/night are similar for hot/cold.

Longer days, always been my favorite. In FL or here, the difference isn't huge. When I lived in Virginia or Northern Japan, the summer solstice / winter solstice day lengths were much more extreme. As a kid living up north was fantastic in the summer.

We went to Jamaica recently (the same time zone we are in at home) and was really surprised that the sun was fully up at 6:30 am while it's more like 8:00 at home, and the sun sets about 6:00 while at home was around 5:15.
I do realize that we are much closer to the equator, so the sun is visible for a much longer time each day, we just had never experienced it like that. It also didn't hurt that the sun shone brightly for 90% of each day, while NW Ohio in Dec/Jan is a dismal place with virtually no sun. Last edited by ckelly78z; 01-18-2019 at 02:47 PM.. |

Daylight varies by 7 hours and 34 minutes up here near Seattle between Summer and Winter Solstice...
We have had a very VERY mild winter so far, it was in the 50's and sunny within the last week- I took the 911 out for a couple of drives. I do love the super long sunny days of summer, sunlight until after 9 pm is delightful and it starts getting light by 5 am! In winter we pay the piper- gets dark at 4:30 pm and sunrise isn't until 8 am.

Today was only the second time this season needing to use the snowthrower here.
Now with the extra daylight, it seems like spring is here soon.

Get off my lawn!

When we were in Alaska in July we spent one night on the Kenai Peninsula. I had consumed a few frosty wheat sodas later than normal and had to get up to pee at about 2:00 AM. It was still just twilight. I went outside and took a photo with ASA 100 color film and no flash. It was weird to have so much sunlight.

I'm looking forward to changing the clocks. I wish we would adopt DST year round.

Lots of snow Porsche away

I worked a stint in Yellowknife, there is something very wrong when you work your full day, go for a few pints with the boys, stumble outside several hours later and it is still broad daylight....
