USPS Read Me

Seems around a month or so ago we got a new delivery person and she sucks.

At minimum I've been getting neighbors mail, and not just from directly next door but on other streets, at least once a week.

Yesterday I posted on our sub divisions FB group if it was just me or what?

Seems to be a rampant issue so a call will be going into our local office.

I'm especially concerned about tax time and possibly missing something important.

One of the neighbors alerted me to a free service from USPS where they scan all your mail and send you an email of images for everything you are due to receive.

A couple of neighbors chimed in that they use it as well and they regularly find mail that is supposed to be delivered but wasn't. They then flag it and it shows up the next day.

One neighbor even mentioned that the service is known and that it has been used to monitor peoples mail.

As in someone registers your address but uses their email and they can see what will be in your mailbox every day making it easier to steal valuable mail.

I'm not sure I totally buy that, I just signed up and the verification questions they ask should not be commonly known stuff. It was based of one of my lines of credit which I guess if someone got their hands on the right envelope would provide all the info needed so who knows.

Any way, passing along for my fellow paranoid people.

Yep informed delivery. I use it
It's only the presort, so if you get mail that wasn't sorted by machine, it won't get scanned. Which is rare.

One of the many funny scenes in the series Cheers, was Cliff Clavin delivering mail to ab apartment complex. He walked off, and all the residents walked out and started handing each other the mail delivered to the wrong apartment.

I live in an apt complex, and our mail people are really bad at getting the mail in the right boxes. I guess I need to create a USPS account and set this up.

Did not know about that service. May just try it out. But I'm lucky (I think) in that I rarely have issues with mis-delivered or non-delivered mail.

Mail theft is common in my neck of the woods. At least it is, if the posts on nextdoor are to be believed. So a couple years ago I bought a locking mailbox. It's big enough that if we go away for a few days, we don't have to ask the neighbors for mail-sitting either.

We have been using Informed Delivery for a while. It is nice to know what's supposedly in the mailbox without needing to leave the house. If it is all just junk mail, we let it sit.

But, this week we were shown mail that was to be delivered on Tuesday and Wednesday. But, each day when I went out to get it there was nothing there. That had never happened before. My wife was panicked at the thought someone was stealing our mail. Later on Wednesday I logged into Informed Delivery and checked each item that was supposed to have been delivered and reported it as not received. Thursday morning, I received the following email,

Quote:
Dear valued USPS® customer,

Thank you for participating in Informed Delivery®. You recently sent us a question about not receiving an expected mailpiece that was shown in your email and/or dashboard.

Informed Delivery provides notifications for mailpieces arriving soon—not necessarily arriving that day. There may be occasions when a mailpiece was scanned by automated equipment, but the mailpiece itself was not relayed to your mail carrier before he or she left for their delivery route that day...
I went back and looked at the USPS website and the description does say arriving soon—not necessarily arriving that day. All of our mail, including the "missing" items were in our mailbox on Thursday. Maybe our carrier just decided not to make deliveries on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I'm pretty sure we have that issue at times.

My favorite USPS service is the one where they like to open a little corner of a card you may have sent, or been receiving... You know, just to check and make sure there's nothing illegal in it... Like that $100 bill you were expecting for your birthday...

I have a PO box and don't have a mail box at my house. The same kind of stuff happens there too. There was a guy working at our local PO up until the middle of last year who is no longer there. The postmaster mentioned to me a couple of times he wasn't too exact when it came to getting the mail into the boxes.

The thing about "informed delivery" is that they'll send out false notices claiming delivery, when they haven't actually made the delivery. This exact thing happens with UPS, FedEx and Amazon, and it is frustrating. I routinely get notices of delivery on my apps when no such delivery has actually been made. Fortunately I also have a Ring camera, so that I can confirm if someone actually does make a delivery to my house.
