I use the good German made Castrol 0W/40 in the Ecoboost Flex and F150, and Indemitsu rotary specific oil in the RX-8. 5k changes on the Fords and 3k on the rotary. I might be pissing away money but I always figure better safe than sorry. Plus I’m an anal retentive SOB that likes to buy the best.

What color is that oil? because that's what really matters

I'm really partial to the stuff with Teflon dust in it that clogs filters.

My newish Focus ST is supposed to tell me when to change the oil, I ran out of patience waiting for the message and changed it at around 8000. I felt like Kramer on a test drive with an empty tank

Thank you! I couldn't imagine how they could make 'cheap' synthetic motor oil (Mobile 1 user here).

I wouldn't have an issue running that oil but I would do oil analysis to get scientific data vs. internet feel good data

But if you shop when on sale or at the evil empire

( Walmart ) you can buy name brand very competitively . Example I just purchased several gallons of 5-40 synthetic Rotella for 19.99 a gallon at the evil empire . I use that in my diesel pickup and my two diesel garden tractors . It is a known good oil , readily available and priced fairly if you do some looking around .

Many folks would be quite surprised that their oil is still acceptable after 5k or 7k or even 10k miles based on oil analysis . As a society we waste a LOT of motor oil

My Fiesta ST is supposed to do that also. I've had it more than 5 years and the oil change light has never come on.

Basic math.

My diesel has 600,000 km. Change oil every 10,000 km. 60 oil changes.

I might save $15 per oil change? That's $900 over 17 years. No thanks.

I have 600,000 km on the engine and it runs like new. I'm doing something right.

Cheaper fuel would interest me, cheaper oil does not.

Then we have oil filters.
Change em at every oil change? why not. It's only money.

Most modern gasoline engines run so clean and have so little wear, their oil filters don't get clogged.
You could go many years on a filter with no problems.

My Honda manual was very specific. If you are doing mostly around town type trips, change every 3500 miles. If you are driving mostly highway miles, change oil every 7500 miles. Change oil filter every 15,000 miles.
