Unloved by whom? Not by people that actually own one. Just ask. But I don't agree that they will ever rise in value. Porsche made nearly 100,000 of them in the first 4-5 years. Nowadays you can count the monthly sales of Boxsters in the low hundreds.

Not by me, Im on boxie # 2, and also have a 914. Usually, by the non Porsche guys, or people who have not driven one . Muscle car guys scooff at them as gay hairdresser cars.

I've never understood the Boxster hate. I've loved them since they first came out. To me the original early 986 is still the best looking Boxster. OK, mine is the least desirable version being a 2.5 with, shhh, two pedals, but I love the car to death. Also I'm a dyed in the wool soft top lover and 996's, or any 911 actual just doesn't look right as a drop top where the Boxster looks perfect.

I totally agree. My friend has a '97 Carrera cab with a whale tail. It looks odd.

With early S models in the 7-10K range, with a mild refresh that is a lot of fun car for the money... I own a 911 right now, but I'd have another boxster in heartbeat in terms of driving dynamics. Best handling car I've owned - I've had 3 (one of them with a roof, OK that one was a cayman). Ironically those cars are now "fixable" (cylinder sleeves, IMS bearing) while the much loved early 997s are not without a major expenditure...

One of my many "falling asleep fantasies" involves picking up a cheap Boxster S, taking the convertible roof off and making a light fun race car out of it. SCCA or PCA have a good series for those I believe...

I mostly agree with the list. One question, at what point are the people who write this crap going to realize that most people under the age of 50 don't care about Camaros and Chevelles? It's always written like they are shocked that people might actually collect something that's not a muscle car.

The Boxster has bottomed out, and while it may never bring huge money I can see it appreciating. Much like the 914 many of them have been trashed and scrapped, so the nice ones will be more valuable just based on that. It's also a normally aspirated six-cylinder mid-engine sports car......Porsche doesn't make one of those anymore. If you buy today, I don't think you'll ever lose money on a nice Boxster. Or add some cash and get a 987 Boxster Spyder, because it's the ultimate evolution of the Boxster.

I don't get the CSL, those are already crazy expensive.

The STi is a definite future classic, and I would add the Lancer Evolution 8 into that department as well. Both are F&F/Gran Turismo hero cars, and finding a low mileage stock example is a total unicorn.

Fox body Mustang, definitely. They've been creeping upwards for a while, and the rare ones like the Saleen and factory Cobra cars are leading the way. I'd still love to have a minty 5.0 notchback.

C4 Corvette, also agree. Hell you can still find a nice ZR1 for $25k, way too cheap for what that car represented. I also think the C5 Z06 will have their day.

MR2 also agree, but think that the 2nd gen turbo cars will ultimately be a better investment. They are prettier, faster, and more fun to drive. They also have more credibility with the F&F crowd.

Ram SRT10, I can see that. Maybe add the F150 Lightning and Silverado SS454 into that grouping as well? The Typhoon and Syclone are appreciating, so why not?

Bronco, absolutely. Nice ones aren't cheap anymore. Also add the K10 Blazer and Ramcharger into that grouping. SUVs can definitely be collector cars, just look at prices for a nice FJ40 Land Cruiser or first gen Bronco.

G8 GXP, maybe, I have a harder time with this one. Really similar to a CTS-V, along with a lot of other hot sedans of the era. Yes it's rare, yes it's one of the last Pontiac models, but will anyone even remember Pontiac in 20 years?

I would also add:

3000GT VR-4/Stealth R/T, 300ZX TT - look at prices for the Supra TT and FD3S RX-7, these are next. A Z32 300ZX will probably be the next car that I add to my garage, because it was my high school dream car.

S2000 - stock, unmodified

Prelude - Si 4WS, or a later SH, again stock and unmodified

Eclipse GSX - stock, unmodified, good luck

Miata - exceptional 1st gen cars have started creeping upwards

Firebird WS6 - dirt cheap for being the best/last example of an iconic nameplate

996TT - these will never be cheaper

When I look at this list it would be difficult for me to take any of the American cars listed over a Corvette C5.

The car in that list that I would consider to have the most potential is the Subaru WRX STi.

Mostly the value sits where it is due to the amount that have needed new engines, puts off younger buyers that can't afford the risk.

But as those younger buyers age up and have more disposable income, the Subaru will be a "dream car".

I would cap the value of a G8 by other cars of similar performance.

I'm not sure Pontiac Nostalgia could make a bump or lasting trend.

The Solstice has an advantage of rather unique styling, there won't be a car like that again.

V8 Sedans with scoops are still being made.

I'm surprised the Viper isn't on the list. The total production of Vipers is <40,000. There are some single years where Corvette surpassed that number.

I think it's mostly in the 20-35 year old range, young men still insecure about their manhood.

For example a Boxster hater I know is a manager at a local store. He is on his second Mini, almost bought an Audi TT first time around but nobody showed him how to drive it and he got frustrated with the paddle shifters as a result.

For the same money he could have gotten a Boxster, but it's not "fast enough".

I guess the Mini and Audi TT are faster?

He thinks the Boxster is a poser because it cannot outrun a Vette in a straight line - I'm serious, this is one of his examples.
