rsguy, How many people work in your shop? Are you an owner?

My brothers hangar. My little one man band, a couple of good friends help here and there.
I managed to get the tip laced, coated and taped this morning... hopefully I'll get it through silver tomorrow. I managed to get the oratex on the interior starboard side walls as well today, it went on without a hitch and looks awesome, plus it'll save lots a #'s. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723164955.jpg |

I replaced my 80K grain water softener with this new 64K grain system yesterday. It went smoothly, since I anticipated the plumbing changes I had to make and bought everything I needed before hand. The valve on my old system was getting sketchy after 16 years, although I could get it to soften the water OK. With just the two of us in the household, even the 64K grain system is a bit over kill. Got my septic tankj serviced last week. Things that have to be done when you live in the country. I have to admit, I don't find things everly easy in my later years.

I have no idea why but this is the first thing I thought of. Good thing you had some very expensive patching material that you could mend your tarps with!!!

Still a lot of work to do including rebuilding the lower door panels that were rotten. I elected to do the repairs in pressure treated 5/4 pine decking then finish with SW Solid Deck Stain which turned out to be a pretty good match with the oiled teak. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723636111.jpg |
Big days yesterday and today, lots of work.... got one of the dope repair wings finish painted and some prep for the new wing build tables.... 16' long. Today welding the pallet rack ends to their new configuration the tables will be 32" tall. It will enable cradle fixtures to hold wing skins for an accurate, true build. We pulled the stallion out of the trailer and set it all back on its gear, it'll be much easier to move about the shop this way.
The stallion is a unicorn plane for me... in the parlance of gone in 60 seconds, it's my Eleanor. An amazing airframe designed and engineered by Martin Hollman.... he did extensive FEA when he created it in the 90's. He was the engineer behind the Lance Neibauer series of aircraft during the 80' and 90's, the series everyone knows as the lancair. This particular bird shares a wing with the lancair es. As built with the original continental engine it's a solid 200 to 220 kt airplane at 14000'. Our goal is to put a tio540 on it... that should get us to 17k ft and solid 250mph ground speeds. The guys in the back seat are a couple good friends, that's the furthest rear seat ( it seats six) it actually has more space side to side than a 170..... and that's the back seat. Martin was 6'6" it's even wider across the front seats.lots of head space. It has a massive useful load with a full wet wing... if you want it, 180 gallons. It'll fly 2500 miles non stop. Way longer leggs than my bladder. I plan to build a sit down liquid relief station into the aft seat with a tube out the tail. It's not a jet but it's going to be the most efficient means of fast cross country travel I can figure to fit my needs.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723687849.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723687849.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723687849.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723687849.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723687849.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723687849.jpg |
2500 miles. I might never fly on an airline again, at least in the US if I had the skillset to keep something like that airworthy..... and with the backseat Jonny, well, hell, that and a sack lunch and that's as luxurious as anything from Spirit Air anyway!!
I look forward to the progress on your little ol' hotrod. |
Here's a video Martin made in the 90's I don't have good luck with embedding... sorry.

MY GOD PELICAN UPLOAD SPEEDS ARE SLOWER THAN THE DOG I BURIED 15 YEARS AGO. Really, over 2.5 minutes to upload 2 photos? I'm on Starlink so speed isn't an issue on my end................

When we got the Santa Fe for my son, it had a cracked piece of black trim on the front bumper cover. I told him we would replace it with one from Pull-a-Part when we found a good one. Well, we finally found one. It is from the same vehicle that we got the WeatherTech floor mats from (see Craigslist finds). Last weekend, we removed the front bumper cover, removed the cracked trim piece, and removed the grill. I masked off the chrome edge of the grill as well as the Hyundai badge, sanded all the flaking black paint off, cleaned it all up with rubbing alcohol and then spray painted it satin black.
Today, we put it all back together. As a bonus, we put the WeatherTech mats in the car. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...58e227ecfc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0374fec103.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...14f428561d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...575ced7d68.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...90478264a1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...31d1dc0012.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3614eda0f8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...92366331e5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3ead3e2fae.jpg Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk |
New seats today on my 1981 e12.
So much betterhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724628437.jpg |
My early 1960s Wilton vice only has 4 inch wide jaws. I’m fabbing up something to make it 6 inches wide. So far, I’ve got two sets of 1 inch pieces and I’m waiting on some 2 inch angle iron. When I get the angle iron, I’ll cut, grind and weld everything up, but make it reversible. I’m also trying to think of some ways to make some hash marks on the face of the angle iron, to grip things. Making the vice jaws wider, will allow me to hold bigger pieces vertically.
My mid-1940s drill press made easy work of drilling the parts. Also, on my 330ci street/track car, I have a Momo steering wheel and that removed the cruise control knobs. The BMW Z4 cruise control stalk works perfectly with my steering column and clock spring. I just need to connect three wires to make it operational. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724631725.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724631725.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724631998.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724631773.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724631773.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724631773.jpg |
Just for fun, I replaced my mowers headlight bulbs with red LED bulbs. I have a mean and mad mower!!! [emoji1787][emoji23]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...371ab67fa1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...272f2b2693.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0cb3548427.jpg

Woke up to water dripping behind my refrigerator. After digging in under the sink to get a look it turns out the toilet was leaking when it was flushed. The 60 year old copper drain pipe wore thin and a hole emerged. Rather than dig up the floor i got it done through the hole under the sink I managed to cut out the pipe and run a new flange past the affected area. There is still a section of horizontal pipe about 6" long I jb welded the bottom to hopefully prolong its life a bit. I probably could have jb welded the hole and the entire pipe where it wore thin It would have been a whole lot easier. Took all day and reminded why I quit my construction career. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724805465.JPG

Ok ... now that's cool, good thinking and execution. Like you I'm sick of construction, it tears me to shreads.

Thanks I guess i should just be thankfull im still flexible enough to get things like that done. Hanging upside down and working with my left hand and all. I had to take my shirt off because it was in the way and hot today! I have boxes and boxes of plumbing stuff but still had to run to the store and cost me 50 bucks. I dont know how people can build a new house it would cost a million bucks to build a 300k house

Still waiting on the angle iron to finish my vice modification.
In the meantime, I’ve been working on my Trailex Trailer, to get it ready to go to VIR next month. I was going to install new leaf spring shackles and noticed the equalizer bushings were worn out. They should be here tomorrow. In the meantime, I installed new wheel bearings and seals. The next two projects on the trailer, will be new leaf springs, Sanding the rust off the axles, paint them and then rewire the trailer. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724813276.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724813276.jpg |
Redoing my old firewood rack: new piers, paint, tore out the old flooring, and new roof when it's finished. I'm glad I have my tractor to pick it up & move the thing around.

Rewired the trailer today and went well, until it didn’t, after turning the lights on, etc. The original wiring, was a rats nest of connections and wires. The trailer part I did was good, but the new seven pin pigtail I bought didn’t match up to the truck. I ended up having to use a test light and a MM to see which wires did what. Everything works, but the electric brakes. I’ll work on that tomorrow…

I had to figure out the F'ed up wiring on a horse trailer we bought. After a few frustrating (and educational) hours with a test light and a diagram, I finally got it to standard. Then I had to have the frame and axles replaced. Did I ever get taken for a ride on that POS. Oh yes. Then the darned horse grew too big for the trailer. At least now I can laugh about it. Fixing my favorite watch, unfortunately fell off a boat. Thought it was OK, but a day later, dreaded condensation under the crystal.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1725237921.jpg

The driver's door window switch in the RX300 was working intermittently, I could tell something had given up as the button wasn't as stiff as the others in the bank of master controls, and recently the power door lock would unlock but not lock. Today, I took the switches all apart and found a tiny plastic part that was broken. The part rides on a spring under the rocker type button, well, it was broken. I removed the part from the rear passenger side switch, put a little grease on the pivot parts, did the same for the power lock button, put it all back together and it is all working properly once again.
I just put new tires on this old RX today, so I am keeping it around a while, trying to keep ahead of the issues. Started this yesterday.... oh boy.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1725248622.jpg

Ordered new springs for the trailer. Hopefully, I can get them swapped out before the next track event in two weeks. It’s calling for heavy rain for the next week.

Had to reposition the drain. The soaker tub I'm using has an osb base bonded on to it... not ok on my concrete floor or in thinset bedding, anyway I used some water proofing to get around the issue. I muffled the slip nut collar height... I'm off by 1/4".. So I'll be needing to un frag that this evening, joy, I get to buy a new tool.

Shots of the water proofing. I routed in some negative space on the deck bottom in order to key the base into the bedding. Next job is to check the floor for level.... I'm guessing it won't be.

At work I'm repairing ringworm on a skybolt with a ceconite/dope cover job. I managed to get silver on it but I don't have a picture of that.

Bathroom remods are the devil's own home improvement project. Especially when they haven't been upgraded since the Nixon administration. I've been there.
Thank goodness there's some eye bleach in the form of high performance airplane restoration. |
Eye bleech... lol. I'm exhausted when I fall into bed every night. I still need to build fixtures to cut up the solid surface cut offs I have into subway style tile.

Delonghi BrewMaster from MarketPlace. What a plastic piece of junk.
I found a failed thermal fuse deeeeep inside the machine. Now it makes very good fresh ground coffee. A very satisfying cheap purchase and repair. |
