Thanks, guys. These were done on two of my Cabbage Palms. This species (Sabal palmetto) is very sturdy with a really thick trunk, so a perfect candidate.

I've never seen it done to any other species of palm nor would I recommended it.

A buddy of mine did mine many years ago and then not long after, moved to another state. I'm glad I was able to get 'em done before he left! I also bought a whole bunch of tikis he carved and still have quite a few stashed away. These are just sections of Cabbage Palm trunk - not a live tree.

To answer your question, Guy....palms are Monocots, so have their vascular system distributed evenly across the trunk diameter. Hardwoods on the other hand are Dicots, so their vascular system is only in a ring just below the bark. Disrupt that ring and the tree really suffers.


Don't feel bad - I accidently locked one of my cats inside mine and didn't discover it until the next morning. Cat was just fine but he did his share of ripping my interior. I had to replace both door panels plus some other stuff. It still has some rips I didn't worry about.

That’s awesome RS!!!! I have actually been in conversation with the Sac City College A&P school here at KMCC. If I punch out and retire this year, Ive always wanted to do that. Might give me the time as a full time student. Guys here at our shop keep telling me I have the right mindset for that…[emoji6]

Pre-work to repairs that will be made on the $8.00 pair of Thourogood Mock Toe boots that Mrs Bugs found at a flea market. Burned through the new soles in record time, and now the midsole is separating. Gonna send them to Thourogood this time for “the works”, Been on a “repurpose” kick lately. Rather have sustainable boots reworked, rather than tossing them. Started with a pair of Redwings, then these and ultimately ending up with a pair of Alden 405’s, aka the Indy boot.

Yes it's an inflatable booth. It works pretty well as long as you keep the bugs out and you still follow proper dust control procedures. I'll be adding a more effective exhaust soon none the less.

Tomorrow we're going to install a hoist to store this fiberglass camper shell in the garage attic.

All this because I'd rather keep the shell than give it away.
Once the shell is removed we have a large Lance slide in camper waiting to be installed in the dually pick up.
I figure instead of giving away the shell might as well hold on to it in case the Lance camper adventure is short term.

This you tube video got me started but I wanted to make my hoist much more robust.

Didn't watch the video, Ted, but looks like quite an operation you have there. Amazing how many different pieces one needs just to do a seemingly simple task! Nice to have that space up there...my garage roof is flat. :)

Yeah lots of small parts many I found on Amazon and a few others at 2 local hardware stores.
It's been a couple of months of searching for quality pulleys and all the little parts.
The camper shell only weighs 600lbs but the hoist parts are rated for 1,500lbs or more.
The unknown is the the max weight carrying capacity of the 2x10 ceiling rafters.
At least it helps that every other ceiling rafter is a doubled 2x10. :)

Long ago I had an engineer spec my storage loft and doubled 2x10s were required for the anticipated static weight on our 20x20 storage loft. :)

Hopefully 24 hours from now the hoist project will be completed....

Then it's back to the garden, like to give everything another shot of 20/20/20 fertilizer.
Your yard lighting projects are interesting and I hope to find time to do the same soon. :)

My initial layman random thought is there is a lack of collar ties or plates above (ie triangulation) to distribute the load to both sides of roof load.
(3/4 x 6 cut plywood might be lighter and stronger than 2 x 6 pine to serve that purpose.)

I know, it is a cheap winch and I plan on replacing it with a Warn.
Good or bad, it turned out to be a bad ground so it lives another day.

Install the 750 and 850 springs on the 330 today. The rears took about 30 minutes and the fronts took about 3 hours.

Also installed height adjustable and articulating lower spring perches in the rear.

We will see how it does next weekend at the track...

Replaced the janky oil cooler lines on the RX350 today. Yeah, look at this junk. The old set up used two rubber hoses and they were prone to developing leaks, so the set up was later changed to all metal lines. At some point in this vehicle's history, one of the rubber hoses must've been leaking and was "repaired" with some cobbled up junk. Geez, it would've been easier to just replace the old hose with another rubber hose. Anyhoo, it is all good now.
I was going to change the oil so I drained the oil and removed the oil filter canister before removing the junk oil cooler lines. I had help from 2 construction workers on ladders installing all the hardware on the ceiling while I handed them all the tools and hardware as they worked 12 to 18 feet above the garage floor.
They said I did my homework and after working 8 hours the 3 of us had the kit installed and the truck shell was hanging safely on the safety chains.
Someday when the shell is gone maybe hang a big slot car track table on it or just use it for overhead storage of race car stuff.
After sourcing parts for 10 weeks I'm so glad that I no longer have this hoist project hanging over my head. lol :D
