Anyone recognize this cannonball?
Found this little guy in New York. Anyone have an idea about it?

Civil War era. They dropped a lot of them in lakes in the North after the war ended to dispose of them. Could still be active. Don’t bounce it around to find out if it still works.

Doesn't look cast. Looks machined

That is not a cannonball. It's likely a high school shot put, which are commonly 12 pounds. The screw hole gives it away, as does its machined finish, and the fact that it is steel. The screw hole opens to an inner cavity that allows it to be filled to adjust weight.
Civil War cannonballs were all cast. Most were cast iron, some were lead. There is always a sprue cutoff mark, a mold seam, and a vent hole cutoff mark. Here is a pretty good treatise on cannonballs vs. outright fakes, and other objects often mistaken as cannonballs: SolidShotEssentialsMod

I think that author is more annoyed with the fact that the ball was labeled as a civil war ball. But as he says. It "might" be a shot put. Really high end one at that. Ha
But says it is the correct size for a 12 pounder... I think I need a cannon now... Haha Last edited by Arizona_928; 05-24-2019 at 09:00 PM.. |

Shot put. Had this same problem at an estate sale marketed as a canon ball. I did end up listing on ebay and a guy in France wanted the old shot put so bad he paid the $100 to ship it.
