Brazen "shopper"....

While waiting at the checkout counter at Costco a woman about 30 to 40 years old walks quickly by us towards the return counter with an expensive garden tool in hand. She obviously is going to the return counter to get reimbursement for something she has not paid for.

Our cashier tells her to get back and line up to pay for it. The woman disappears into the back of the store. I did not see her again.

I am amazed at how brazen some "shoppers" can be at attempted theft....

Saw the same thing when I worked at Rich’s in Atlanta many moons ago.

Guy grabbed some merchandise, walked behind a counter, grabbed a bag to put the stuff in and went to a cashier to return it.

I called security and he escorted out.

I have regularly gone to Target or Wal-Mart, even in Scottsdale, and seen shoplifters in cuffs, getting put into police cars parked in front of the door. It's too bad they don't do much time, if any, for being so stupid.

I was behind a lady at the self check out at the grocery store. She finished bagging and last. I couldn’t get the scanner to work so I called the guy who over sees the self checkout over. He told me I had to pay for the groceries I scanned before I could start scanning again. I told him that isn’t my bill it’s that ladies over there that’s walking out the door. He said fu$k it and that’s what the chain gets for eliminating jobs. She got away with a lot of groceries.

Lots of stores around here have told the employees not to go after shoplifters - not worth getting hurt is the official word, but I suspect lawsuit is the real reason.

So, professional shoplifters know they can get free merch, but now they want cash instead. Ergo, the bold ones don't even want to go through the hassle/ritual of leaving the store and coming back in to get their refund.

And this is why a 3# block of medium cheddar is 9 bucks on sale at the local Fred Meyers.

Another example of the 99% being required to accommodate the 1% in our brave new world.

Get off my lawn.

Once watched a guy applying underarm deodorant then return the "stick" to the shelf.

Steve -

I think they make exceptions in some cases - especially if the item appears to be one that came from their store - including exclusives.

What I have observed is the personality of these grifters are very persistent and they fully know how to exploit the system.

Heck, in my opinion, if they put as much effort into an actual job, they could really prosper.

Yup.

Build it and they will come:

Following his November 2018 election win, Dallas County Criminal District Attorney John Creuzot, a Democrat, announced that he will no longer prosecute certain low-level crimes, including thefts of personal items worth less than $750 as long as it isn't for economic gain, according to CBS DFW.

So I can steal your $700 item as long as I have no intent to sell it?

Chris, you are a nice guy. I'd hate to see you get into that kind of life.

He said he wouldn't prosecute. That doesn't mean no ride to the po po, getting booked and sitting in the cooler awhile. Not to mention being 'identified' for facial recognition purposes. These actions will put a leash on some of these thieves. But, alas, most will move on.

Software will eventually evolve, but that won't even matter when the DA refuses to perform their job.

I remember back when I worked at Sears Auto. This guy , grabs one of those big rotating watch displays, and just makes a mad run for the doors. He had to go out through the auto center, so we got to see the whole thing.
Security caught up to him, and knocked the display out of his hands, but this brother, was fast, and he slipped away through the parking lot .
That was brazen.

Rich’s was very generous with their return policy back in the 60’s - 90’s? They would take anything back. And people took advantage of it.

I had one lady bring a worn out POS jacket for a refund. It wasn’t even a brand we carried. I told her no.

I had a pretty brazen friend(?) in the early '60s. He, another guy, & I were in a large department store looking at clothes & were in the outdoor jacket section. He put on a jacket & asked us if we liked it. We said yes. He proceeded to walk out of the store through the front door with the jacket on. We (the other two guys) looked at each other and started to leave, I, out the same door some distance behind the guy with the jacket while the other guy walked toward the door on the other side of the store. When the guy with the jacket on got to the door & started walking out, somebody in the store yelled, "Stop thief." He was already out the door some ways when I was just exiting. Two guys in long, trench coats came charging through the store and out the door. The guy who had taken the jacket had already broken into a run. One trench coated guy charged by me but the other stopped and grabbed my arm & said, "You were with that guy who stole the jacket." I said in my best voice, "I'm sorry but I don't even know the guy. I've seen him around at school but don't know who he is. You'd better go catch him before he gets away." The guy with the jacket jumped the wall bordering the shopping center. We looked around for him for a while & couldn't find him, so we went to his house (maybe a mile or two away). He answered the door when we rang the door bell. He was sort of an adrenalin junkey & I never trusted him again. He committed suicide in the late '80s.
