America's Cup

Formula One ain't got 'nuthin on the tech that these guys are using; and the coverage with all the graphics in the water really makes it easy for the casual fan (that's me!) to understand a lot of what's going on! It makes me wonder though, is this really good for a sport? I imagine Louis Vuitton is enjoying the fruits of their sponsorship, but I bet the crusty old salts are just apoplectic over what this has become!

(Good god, these huge lunks can just about literally turn on a dime....)

I'm as old as many of you geezers, and still plenty salty and love these exciting new boats. And the fast paced action on the course.

During the last Am Cup series there was a lot ot learning and improving in the boat handeling through out the series.

This time they should all be more up to speed, making for pretty exciting close quarters manurvering And tight crossings.

Should be plenty of races run entirely on the foils.

Cheers Richard

Me too. Miss the old "Lead bottomed money gobblers". Although this is exciting too.

Don't they run several classes? I mean some of the old wood should still be around. Even some old carbon fiber that actually sat in the water.

Jan-March 2021 in NZ.
They are still trying to make it a spectator sport. It will never be like the super bowl or nascar. They have ruined the race. Should go back to monohulls with no foils and a strict measurement rule. Make it so the whole thing can be done for 10-20 million. Multihulls were retarded for match racing.

it is in new zealand so 12+ hours out so post midnight timing
and their summer is our winter

the america's cup 50's race in NYNY in 3 weeks may be on u-tube or face book or some europe pirates feed
but those are older JR cats not the boats that will race in 6th- 21st March 2021.
or the qualifiers that start in 2020

sure but that is not the AMERICA'S CUP

30'S J boats are mostly gone maybe a few left but never many
50's 60's 70's 12meters are still around and race
but nobody cares

I donot think the big 72's from the last cup will do much
thats why they build the 50's that still race but never were ''cup'' races

the 50's foiling cats will race in NYNY in june 22-23

but are the going racing cup deal
until the ''new boats '' come out foiling mono hulls this time in 2021

I tended to lose interest when they stopped being big gracious yachts.

I figure out (roughly but easily) the US NZ time difference by going... NZ is five hours behind the US.

But we are a day ahead, but ignore this.

A lot of us got our start in boat racing in dingys, I started in International 14s which have a lot more in common w/ the current Cup boats than w/ the lead bottom pigs that the 12 meter boats represent

The speeds those boats are going is nothing short of spectacular.

Awesome Bill. That's what I consider real sailing. We call those a 470 around here. Not like those other things that are like sailing a Playstation.

Lots of cross pollination goes on between F1 and America's Cup racing

A good friend/ex-F1 work colleague is working on the twin canting t-foils on the next INEOS Team UK boat

These guys materials are used by some F1 teams too https://www.thinplytechnology.com/

I'm into anything fast and cool and America's Cup racing has both in heaps!

I love the modern America's Cup racing. In my earlier days we raced Hobie 18, SuperCat, Sea Wind 24, and F-27 multis. No foils but a lot of wet fun.
