How do I connect a tablet/laptop to a monitor?

How do I connect a tablet/laptop to a monitor? With a 13” screen, it’s difficult to read some spreadsheets or programs and a monitor would really help.

The tablet/laptop has (1) USB B and (2) USB C ports. The monitor has (2) HDMI and (1) D-Sub In.

I’ve read that the cable and/or laptop needs to be video/audio capable.

Or is an adapter the best way?

Thanks!

If you are running Apple products. . . .

An iPad connected to an Apple TV (we’re using Apple TV gen 4) then air drop it through the Apple TV. My monitor is 75 inches, easy to see.

USB C carries video.

Might as well expand your connectivity options while you are at it.

I personally use these so can confirm they work.

If it’s got 2x hdmi , just plug it into your tv whenever you need a bigger display .

His monitor has 2x hdmi, device only has USB.

Sounds like a convertible, maybe Surface Pro, a Yoga or similar.

Would help if OP told us make model of device.

It’s a Targus if I’m not mistaken. Just got it from our IT dept, so I’m not real familiar with it. I’ll have to post the model tomorrow, as it’s at the office. It does act as a tablet that can fold over, touch screen, pen screen, etc.

I have one that plugs into my USB C port. My printer and wireless mouse plug into it.

Are you using a docking station? probably not. there are USB to VGA adapters that you can use.

No docking station, but I did see something on the bottom that might be part of one.

The monitor does not matter beyond that it supports HDMI.

The laptop needs to support usb c dp alt, (display port alternative via usb c)

If it does not have a standard video out port it’d be an absolute fail if it did not support usb c dp alt.

Just grab what I linked, forget a docking station. I have several of them between home and office and all my guys use them as well.

It’s a Dell Latitude tablet with a Targus case/keyboard.

According to Dell, that has
Quote:
1 Headset/mic combo jack
1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type A)
1 USB Type C (Power delivery & DisplayPort support)
1 USB 2.0
1 HDMI 1.4
So just plug the HDMI connector (it's almost certainly a mini type E or type F https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI which is why you didn't recognise it) into the TV HDMI in with an appropriate cable. HDMI also carries audio. Or buy a USB-C adapter with a DisplayPort->HDMI cable.

Some older/smaller TVs - or cheap ones with poor implementations, like you often find in hotels - may not work well with being asked to display 1080p or above.

Another option is plug a Chromecast/FireStick into the TV and just cast the entire display.

I ordered what SM recommend along with a USB C to HDMI cable.

I’ll know in a day or two what works.
