So the pod at least looks better but seems like it still has that lame sky high mast... does that suffer from potential mast bump?

Adsb

Guys and gals that fly... I'm curious what's your take on adsb?

I work out of a hangar on a municipal airport with a 9000' runway surrounded by a lot of open space. It's uncontrolled. We get flight school traffic from 4 other cities, their airports being in more congested areas, and recently we have a college flight school that added a new facility to our ramp...

It's a $h!t show.... every day.

The us population of ga pilots is still not what it was in the 70's and 80's. I grew up spotting other air traffic out of dad's ac. I don't remember hearing much about midair collisions growing up... or off airport crashes for that matter.
I frequently use flight following and even call towers to report my pos when I'm not required to as a matter of courtesy.
All of this to say I've never felt more in danger flying than I do now with adsb.
I have adsb "in" only in my current ride. I always report my pos..... but lately it doesn't seem to matter.
I'm not hearing "looking " "say pos again" or other radio traffic like "no factor " as much as it did in the past.
Yesterday, a student was flying over the top of the pattern with only about 150' buffer and about an eighth of a mile space... he didn't see me on the down wind, and he wasn't talking. Last week we had a kid joining into the dw at the 45 300' low.... we had to side step him, he wasn't looking either or listening.
Has ADSB attenuated SA? Or is what I'm seeing a result of children teaching children? This was not behavior I recall seeing 6 years ago.
I have a gdl 82 "out" setup going into my airframe this month, but jeez adsb doesn't seem to be helping the overall sa of today's new pilots.... pilots not aviators.

I'm not a pilot, but I also follow Jaun Brown, Hoover and Dan Gryder. Something that comes up frequently is lack of situational awareness. People seem to be focusing on their displays rather than what is outside. Gryder advocates starting a conversation about intentions rather than just a position report. Makes sense to me. Running into another airplane can kill you. I've never heard of someone being killed by their display.

Unfortunately, not true...

Early in the evolution into displays (CRT in those days) there was a great deal of concern on pilot and co-pilot fixation inside the aircraft.

In my community we had two controlled flights into the aqua because the junior person in the left seat, the Aviation Tactical Officer (ATO and also a pilot) running the mission would be behind and the senior person, usually the pilot in command, would lean over and try and help in order to get the aircraft back in the game...forgetting the part about driving the bus.

Think cell phones today in cars.

So many aircraft now have a pictorial display on their panel of nearby traffic, flight school aircraft included. They see the aircraft on their screen and think "I got 'em". Of course that does not relieve them of their responsibility (or common courtesy) to communicate with fellow pilots.

I think younger generations of pilots are becoming fixated on their panel and spending less time with eyes outside.

"Children of the magenta line"

Search & Rescue says it's now easier to find downed airplanes, as its usually on a direct line between departure location and destination.

Put in your destination, follow the magenta line on the GPS, right into the mountain. OOPS!
Pilots used to look out the window, go around the mountains until they ran out of gas who knows where.

Ya... it's sad to say but I saw this one coming. Between the privacy invasion aspect of adsb and these boners not listening to the radio, or looking outside the airplane, I'm afraid adsb is only a win for big brother.
Don't know how the greatest generation, the Korean war vets and the boomers ever flew a ga bird anywhere with only atc...
This is stupid. Children teaching children isn't helping either.
As little as ten years ago the most dangerous thing I'd seen was the odd old guy that wouldn't talk on the radio, now in one week I've seen two birds in the pattern closer than I ever should have.

ADSB is another example of a good idea poorly implemented and trained on. It should be an aid but is a crutch, just like all the electronics now. I am probably old school, but student pilots are better served with a paper manual and a 6 pack in the cockpit until looking outside is a proper habit.

I love me an electronic checklist, but I learned on the old circular slide rule computers.

And i was afraid i was being a whiney, grumpy old airport bum...
My cfi is 70 something... he's been tutoring me on the finer points of operating in my conventional geared gigantic ruddered cap 10b. He loves it, but when I confronted him the other day about our experiences and idiotic student behavior the last couple times we flew, he had to admit it's just not what it was hyped to be...
Unfortunately I have to have it because these idiots just won't know I'm there if I dont.

The smallest crowd of all their shows is this weekend at their home base in El Centro.
The F-22 demo is a must see

Looks like there will be an air show at MCAS Beaufort in April.

That’s the same weekend the PCA has a DE at Roebling Road. My buddy and I were going to drive his 930 and my 911 to the DE. We might need to make a side trip to the airshow.

I’ll be in Bluffton that week and pass by the MCAC every day. I may have to stop on the way there, to watch practice.
