Miraculously, the screens held during our last hurricane. Lost a bunch of shingles though. Very strange to hear them mid-storm running off the roof in the middle of the night of course. Damn

Viera is a new community as in post Andrew which changed everything building code wise.

I am sure that house is as solid as a brick. You replaced the roof recently? Did you go metal?

I am really hating I have to go into Hurricane prep mode. I honestly did not think it was heading this way.

I guess I start doing to small things this evening and wait to see where they think it is going.

I noticed my office email went dead today, everyone is in panic mode, people are driving like idiots, gas stations all have long lines and grocery stores are picked clean.

I just told me wife we need to GTFO of Florida too many people are moving here.

Arizona is looking very tempting to me.

Reporting from Ft Lauderdale. people are panicking. The 15 minute news cycle is killing them. No money on the ATM's close to my office and gas stations already running out of gas.

2 neighbors already called asking for space to store cars in my fortified home and garages.

On the one hand, taking a Cat 4 or 5 in the face is no fun. On the other, the news media fearmongers are doing too good a job at times. I've had many pleasant dreams of Jim Cantori getting smacked in the face hard by a flying freeway sign.. I've lived through many hurricanes and unless you were about to eat a Cat4's direct hit and live in a trailer park, it was wind and rain and then fun in flooded streets and picking up tree branches... And empty water bottle aisles at Publix ! I don't miss it, I traded for earthquakes which are worse in a way and better in others (surprise, it's a quake!!! oh it's over)

If you're gonna live in FL or the carolinas I recommend you buy a house at some elevation from the water, made of cinderblocks, and buy a generator... Then it's not really a big deal unless you're on the water in the path of a big one. Good luck to you all !!

Wise words. I built out of poured concrete (even the roofs), all windows are state of the art hurricane spec, large openings are protected, landscape was carefully chosen and placed, garage doors are reinforced and I have 1000 gallons of fuel for my generator and a gas fired kitchen. And, our floor is at 7 feet above the 100 year flood elevation.

City thought i was nuts. Then I told them where I have lived and what I do for a living...

God bless and protect all.

We had our whole house generator propane tank filled today. Huge peace of mind to have power when the outage occurs.

Local gas station has only 93 octane.

Flying in to Orlando tomorrow, with a return flight leaving Sat 7 PM

I think I’m good, but always welcome a second opinion.

Anyone....

With the accuracy of path projections I say go for it if she's worth it. ;)

Hey Jim....you may want to take a look at Ft Myers. Might be of interest to you either as an investment or possible re-locate option.

;)

You are good - it's starting to slow. Although the Airlines might have other ideas.

;)

The wife wants out of Florida. I wanted to stay due to my license and not having to deal with whatever it takes to get one in Arizona, where she wants to go.

I tossed out Ft. Myers as it keeps popping up as an up and coming Florida city. She found a cool house. We passed.

I know you were joking. Our plan originally was to get away from Florida. Wife was looking for quiet towns away from Phoenix and Tuscon but not too far from them. If you know what I mean.

I would prefer the Smokeys in North Carolina to he honest. That is still a contender as well.

Right now I'd like to be somewhere else in the summer months but the rest of the year I'm good staying here. This concept would include being able to bail out when necessary during hurricane season.

I'm not in the position to do so right now so will hunker down. My 96 y/o Mom lives here too - and alone so it's convenient to be here to be able to assist with her needs.

I just pulled out my generator and it started first pull. Ran for about 2 minutes then shut off and wouldn't re-start. Fuel leaking from the bottom of the carb, so I will take a look in the morning and see what the problems is. Can't be anything too serious. It's a Wen Power 5500 and worked great for me when we had Matthew and Irma.

Fuel line came loose....ha...no wonder it stopped running! Also very brittle. I will replace it tomorrow and should be in good shape.

Since I’m still a FL noob (3 years in October), I like to ask locals what they are doing. So far, no one has said they are evacuating. I understand though, that folks on bases and islands pretty much have no choice but to evacuate.

Need the Bermuda high to weaken.

I have a rule Cat 4 and 5 I GTFO of the way.

Where exactly are you located?

I lived in Palm Bay and worked in Merritt Island for 10 years, I lived in Cape Canaveral for a while too.

If you are beach side, I would get out, if you are mainland then the decision is yours.

What bothers me right now is WTF do you go, we still have models taking it to the Keys others taking it up the east coast, yet others taking it across the state.

Then you have to deal with traffic jams, lack of gas, and lack of lodging.

As of right now, I am staying put.

astrochex 08-29-2019 05:26 PM

West Melbourne in Brevard County.

Wife and I figure we would at least have to leave the state, but like you say, where do you go? The other issues you mention are significant negatives too. Did I mention our cats hate to even be held much less captured and stuffed into a travel carrier?

We’re staying.

My FEMA USAR team has been put on alert for a possible deployment down to FL. Getting my gear ready just in case
The FL teams that were sent to PR were demobilized and are heading back.

We just bought a home on Anastasia Island in the Butler Beach area. It's fairly new (2015), concrete, and above the 100 year flood level (just barely). However, we're still up north at the moment. If things go sideways down there, the plan is to head down as soon as it's viable, with a big-ass generator, big gas cans (full), water, and hope.
We're a quarter mile west of the Atlantic, and about the same east of the Matanzas River. Fingers crossed.......
