I sold my 1971 tin top Westy 2 years ago for $8k and it was a decent example that I had modified (interior-wise). Nothing too special, but it looked and ran nice. Maybe a 6 or 7 outta 10 in looks. The later versions 1972-on aren't quite a desirable, but there is a market... go to www.thesamba.com .

Got my old 71 single cab shop truck back, after selling it about 15 years ago. I have an extra 3.0 laying around. The Porsche lettering would be cool.

I'll have to see if I can find the pics on my PC, since clearly they aren't on my phone

That thing must have been a bear to steer at speed, John.

Even with whatever improved parts were available, those were primitive front ends. When I worked at Bob Smith Porsche in Hollywood back in the ‘80s, the service manager had a double cab w a mild 911T motor in it w 915 that was a nice rig. It was a 1970 or so, 2nd generation. Back then, 911 motors were plentiful and cheap if you were in the business. He probably got it out of a customer’s totaled car.

The ‘79 in the OP is a decent van in terms of engine evolution and general mechanics, as far as these things went. It’s also a year that you used to just about have to give away but things have changed and I’m behind on pricing.

I was going to ask for interior pics but then I read the part about “gutted.” Factory folding bed configuration adds a lot on busses.

The local 911 guru uses just that for his parts-getter:

And yep - powered by 3.6!

That's true. Most of what was needed was there on the W/C Vanagon. I think they upgraded the radiator with another row. And that's what I was thinking of, not an air cooled '79. But some '79's were water cooled. IDK when and where you got one.
And since the subject of this thread doesn't have a front grille....
