I'm toying with the idea of selling my '03, F350, 7.3L sometime. Pickups are unjustifiably expensive, and I'd really like one of the new aluminum, crew cab, F150s. I've started looking at the Ford passenger vans. I had an '89 Club Wagon for years, & it was a great vehicle. I slept in it camping, traveled in it, & could haul anything (pretty much) I can in my pickup - size wise. It had a tow package also. The prices for a nicely optioned one seem significantly below the current pickup prices, and they pretty much meet all of my use requirements.

Marv, you will be AMAZED at what your 7.3 PSD will bring $$ if still in good shape. It is like the holy grail of pickup truck motors, next to the Cummins diesel in the Dodges...still big money after 16 years.

Yup. Great motors but maybe steeped in a little more lore than appropriate. Their performance isn’t really better than a newer F150 Ecoboost and they sell for the same money.

No engine lasts forever. Simplicity, and pre-emissions help hold its value.

7.3 trucks have a bit of a cult status if they have really low miles, otherwise they are not expensive. I have one. There are a lot of dealers and sellers asking stupid $$, (as in they are never going to get it), for clean older Super Duty trucks including 6.0s. It’s all because they’ve read on the Internet about how valuable and rare/sought after they are.

UR right about crazy prices. I know a guy that just paid $93K for a 3/4 Diesel, Financed.

I felt luck to only pay $22,500 for a 2015 Tundra in 2017 with an easy 94,000 highway miles....I only do about 4,500 miles/yr on PU, so will last till Almost Forever....

My brother emailed me that he just saw a brand new Colorado Bison diesel on the road. $51k.

Well, my truck has 185K (which isn't too many miles for a 16 yr. old truck), that dark grey paint that is shedding, & a few minor mechanical things. So I don't expect to get top dollar, but it has been maintained very well. I can get a window van with the 3.5L engine having 450 lb. ft. of torque for between 30K & $40K. That seems to beat a comparable pickup by quite a bit. For me, the only difference is it doesn't have the unlimited vertical clearance of a pickup bed.

You can get a 2001-era pickup for like $5k that is mint.
Or you can get a 2008 beater for $1500

I never bought a pick up in AZ used. Mind as well grab your ankles. Same with new now in days. My single cab cummins came with a 50k sticker. I didn't pay anywhere near that much, but that's what they're going for.

I've had good luck with oil field trucks from Texas. Not a bad deal if you have a few buddies and a weekend. Buy 2-3, sell them when you get back to AZ for some stupid profit. If you title them at third party mvd they usually loop hole taxes on the Texas titles. Don't do it at the DMV they'll collect sales tax...

That's prolly the best advice I have.

Ya I have family in OK. Just need to start shopping there and have them do the inspection for me. Buying private party will skip AZ sales tax too, which is another savings.

Get a big old pickup truck and replace everything. Get a '72 Ford and put a 460 in it. Auto. New rear end. New brake calipers, disks, lines, MC... New tie rods, ball joints. New/recovered upholstery.

You wouldn't get a truck which paints your toenails while rubbing your back, but you would get a very good truck.

porsche4life 09-03-2019 09:34 PM

Supe.... as fun as a project like that would be, I just don’t have time. One reason I want a truck is to do all the other projects we have planned! 🤣🤣🤣

This is why I bought new 4 years ago. 3-5 year old trucks out of warranty were going for close to 30k when the same model new was under 45k. I know, an extra 15k is a big chunk of change but now I have a truck that I know the exact history. Buying a good used truck is not as easy as buying a new sedan ...

The exact reasoning why I bought my truck new. Ordered it with all the options I wanted.

Marv,

I have driven both a new Ford and Chevy full sized vans. The Ford had the stock 3.7L in it and not the Ecoboost or Powerstroke. The Chevy had a 6.0 gas in it and huge gas tank. They both went down the road just fine.

I have read that the 2020 Ford Transit will come with AWD with modes you can select. Sounds like a winner to me!

Wow. Makes me appreciate the deal my brother and I got a couple years ago. Picked up an 2006 diesel GMC 2500 4x4 with 285k miles, some minor body damage and a hard start issue. My brother pulled a leather interior out of a wrecked Escalade and installed the seats. We then installed a lift pump, (and a a Cat fuel filter housing) in hopes that it would cure the starting ssue. No dice. Apparently it needs a rebuild to address leaking seals around the injectors. No time for that, so we've been hitting it with starter fluid for the last couple years. (less is more with that stuff). Sucks having to do it while it's raining, but it starts right up and the thing pulls like a beast. Was under 5k.😁

You sure about that? I think I'd ask to be certain.
https://azdor.gov/individual-income-tax-filing-assistance/understanding-use-tax

"Individuals who purchase taxable products from out-of-state locations, but pay no sales tax, are responsible for paying use tax. In addition, individuals who purchase taxable merchandise over the internet, and that merchandise is used or consumed in Arizona, must pay use tax."

"Casual sales between individuals are the exception and not subject to use tax. Items purchased for use in Arizona from people who make isolated or occasional sales, and who are not engaged in the business of selling tangible personal property at retail, are not subject to use tax."

I know in Ohio the tax is collected when I have the vehicle "inspected" and transfer title.

I had to go back and see what I paid for my 2015 Tundra. I do have a bit of a hook at the local dealer - the owner is a friend of my neighbors and uses my beach for windsurf from - have beers with him twice a year or so.

That was probably worth 2% - Tundras fly off his lot.

So, SR 5 and TRD were the only options, which had all the mechanical, tow stuff included. I did order front leather seats separately for $1400 installed since seat heat is a first world indulgence of mine.

To get leather seats otherwise would have meant upgrading to a very expensive "package" of stuff I don't need - Nav, premium sounds, better trim, etc.

Just a tad over $29k. Still a lot of money but I keep these things for at least 10 years. It does have a lot of miles on it, mostly highway: I am still, after 110k, on the initial set of brake pads.

Private party sales of vehicles in AZ are not taxed. So the out of state thing doesn’t matter. ;). I’ve registered 4 cars with out of state plates, never an issue

Out of state title transfers will trigger a real DMV office to collect taxes.
I use third party DMV as they don't care. Only time I've paid sales tax at the third party DMV is when I titled COA paperwork.

Used private party in the state. the state won't collect use tax, or other taxes. The laws say they do. The DMV doesn't even care how much you bought it for.
