A buddy called me up one day, and said we needed to go look at a car in a barn that was only 3 miles away. The owner slid open the garage door to reveal a really rough 1963 Jag E type coupe that needed everything. I believe it had the inline 6, and hadn't ran in 20 years.
We asked the price, and he replied "25". We did a little math on the $$ it would take to get it back on the road, and then the additional $$ it would take to make it presentable, and politely declined. On the way home in the car, I asked my buddy "did he mean 25 hundred, or 25 thousand ? He was thinking the same question, but we wisely declined to turn around, and ask....absolute money pit. |

A friend of mine was really in love the E type. Like many newbies he jumped on a 12 cylinder version first because it was extra cool. He quickly realized it was a very unreliable car, and he could not drive it more than a few miles before something broke, or need to be adjusted again.
He traded up to a later model 6 cylinder car that the PO had spent a fortune on to get it more reliable. My friend would only drive it to a car show, or an a pretty weekend day. He was astonished when I told him I have driven my 911 to 40 different states, and plan to drive to 48 and maybe even 49 states. E types are very pretty but it is like have a super model on your concrete job construction site, all the guys will stop to look, but the supermodel will not be a bit of help with the hard work.

I took 17 years restoring mine. Pushing the starter button felt like cranking a Merlin. Hideous ergonomics as mine as a ‘61 flat floor. Took a long time to make reliable and then I sold it in a moment of madness.

When I get time, I need to scan a book of 8 x 11 photos and show how this once started out as a major $500 project.
Yes, my buddy got it for $500, spent a few years and got it about 90% restored. When facing a divorce and job change, he sold it to me for $3,000..... ![]()

This was the condition of mine when I started the project in 1997 but it cost me $5000. I sold it for considerably more in 2014 but it was a labor of love for me. My Dad (now 83) taught me how to weld in door skins and floors and lead load panel joints and gaps. Priceless time with my Dad. I was a fool to sell it but I was just not driving it.

My first car-boner memory was all e-type - someone gave me the Matchbox model. I couldn't have been more than four or five....schwinng! Yowsa!
I'd never own one but I have unbridled respect for those who do, in the same way I respect owners of Alfas and Fiats and Lancias.
