I fail to see your logic. With all of the safety nannies and air bags, these should be pretty safe.

Would you feel differently if the badge on the back said Tiguan?

Maybe the safety nannies are part of the problem, because they make driver and parents feel safe and overly confident, which can lead to excessive speed and at some point, physics take over. Same would be true for a Tiguan, except it does not carry the “rich kid” badge. It would also not have come to our attention if the title said “VW goes over a bridge”...

Right, it could have been a Chevy, Ford, Toyota, VW, Porsche, whatever and it likely would have ended similarly.

17-18 year olds , with a fresh drivers license, should never have more then 100 bhp at their disposal.. anything more with that lack of experience is asking for trouble

Is it stated in the news reports somewhere that the driver of the Macan was speeding or driving recklessly immediately prior to the collision? As it stands, the only significance of the brand of car in the crash is that the driver apparently survived a 30' fall from a bridge to the ground below. Sounds like the parents picked a good car for a bad teenaged driver to me. Too bad about the passengers, though. Very tragic.

Every parent works the new driver equation: what can/do they drive equation, the trade off between safety and performance....or at least they should. There is no more worrisome time for a parent than the first months of their children out on the road solo.

I was very fortunate. My daughter is a really excellent driver, very aware and in the pocket driving. We started her out on a manual 1999 Tacoma with 4 cylinders of heat. Good safety equipment, couldn't outrun a Burro.

We then got her a used FJ which she still has.

My son was a good driver starting out and got better...he smoothed out the wrinkles. He also started in the 1999 Tacoma and drove it through his first year of law school. We also found him a used FJ, which he still has.

Every car has it's limits and most kids will test them...I know I did. My first car was a 1960 VW with 36 raging Teutonic horses looking for trouble. I shudder to think what a fall of the type in the link would have occasioned in my VW. Eek.

All that said, I have no issues with the Macan: A base model Corolla with a 169HP 2.0 liter will put a rookie driver in peril just as easily.

Took my daughter to a SCCA Teens driving school. Best thing I ever did. Gave her confidence and learned the limits of control.

I survived learning to drive with a Porsche I saved up and bought.

More than 100 bhp.

Today with the modern cars 100bhp is a serious liability when trying to safely make it onto an interstate.

If the modern four door in in front with a 250HP V6 decides to not accelerate until the merge line, the <100HP car behind is completely and utterly hosed.

I would also say it isn't age, but rather ability, and ability to learn, plus attentiveness and taking it seriously.

People can still be scary drivers even at age 50.

My two kids got to share a mustard yellow Volvo 240 wagon. It was the only one like it for miles so if they did anything crazy someone would report back to us about it. They were not allowed to give rides to any of their friends and to always let us know where they were going. They were good about it and never abused our trust. (that we know of)

Well they get a few points for accuracy............

The low hp arguments are spurious and disingenuous at best. at worst they are complete bovine scattology.

Not having distractions in the car is important.

I remember the times when us little ones in the back were being distracting dad would pull over onto the shoulder and hit the brakes.

It was pretty effective in getting us to quiet down.
