Real Pirates of the Caribbean

Yep, thar be Pirates

We are actually dealing with this at work. We are supplying materials to repair Mexican off-shore platforms which were pillaged.

I was under the impression that this was pretty common in the sea of Cortez and in parts of the Caribbean (Like off the coast of Venezuela and around the Turks and Caicos.

A fellow who has a pretty nice boat (yacht?) told me that it's not unusual to be approached by boats at night when anchored in the Bahamas.

This is not "NEW", it has been going on for some time. It is definitely a combination of Narco-Cartels/Organized crime and Cuba santioned criminals.

One of off-shore platforms we helped refurbish about 9 years ago was ransacked by modern Gulf Pirates. They mostly steal equipment which they resell. Some want to blame the "Oil Refrom" of Pena-Nieto, but this preceeded his election. In fact, our business dropped severely while he was in office.

And from my very limited knowledge of international maritime law, only government military ships or police forces are allowed to have cannons or real defensive or offensive weapons. So ya can't just set up a trap for them, and the US Navy has better things to do.

It sounds like it is just time to pull all the off shore platforms out of there, or at least start to do so until the local countries stop the pirates. I wonder how the cruise ships can get through the areas without the pirate attacks.
