In the state of Washington, an initiative was placed on the ballot to lower vehicle fees. It passed by a huge margin. The state and other tax districts are filing suit...essentially suing the voters...

That happened there years ago as well. Voters passed a flat $30/yr. reg. fee for all vehicles and immediately the tax-collectors started scheming to find loopholes and add money-grabbing "conditions" to it.
It didn't take long for that flat $30 to creep up to several hundred for many vehicles.

Here we passed a law that new taxes required more votes than they could get from just Democrats. The work around was that they call everything a fee, rather than a tax.

a healthy margin at least

the fees would be cut to $30/vehicle which means the roads would not get repaired

the suit is over whether it is constitutional or not

Funny stuff.

The Honolulu DMV charges are based on vehicle weight. We pay a gas tax like most states, but our legislature is looking for a way to tax the electric cars as they don't pay their fair share in road usage tax. So, we may go to a mileage based fee.

77 930 and 88 Cab - $300ish
04 X5 - $500
11 X3 - $440
14 535i - $400ish

Um, no. My 84 911 was $180 this year and my Camry was $193.

So what do they spend the gas tax money on? Mass transit?

I thought CA DMV rates were based on value?

A percentage of the value.

There's a catch and I don't know the answer. My 911 was gifted to me 20 years ago, so I didn't have a used sales price. I have no idea what the DMV uses to figure out a value in this case.

I totally forgot in my last post... I didn't pay for my Camry either when I took the keys in 2014. I'm going to guess that the DMV uses some low-ball number to base they registration off of in these cases. But I really don't know. I just know that both are under $200.

Here in SC: after 15 years the taxes are gone I just pay a $25 yearly tag fee. The 911 and 930 have the tag fee and no tax. Imagine my excitement when I got my Lotus bill yesterday, it turns 15 this year so we went from $600 last year to $25 this year. Merry Christmas to me!

GA did the same thing about 5 years ago, with the exception of trucks, trailers, and cars that you had bought more than 5 years previously. So for a while I was paying over $200 for my 2006 RSX Type S and $20 for my 2009 Cayenne Turbo S. Finally sold the RSX when I retired, and now my most expensive tag is for my car trailer. Every other vehicle is $20.

Yes, as widebody99 pointed out, the 0 or close to 0 value as determined by the DMV car is $125. I stand corrected

Your gifted Camry is high in comparison.

My registration and vehicle inspection in Texas is $74. Varies from county to county, but shouldn't be over $100 for a regular p/u or passenger car.

Online, by mail, in person. It is probably fastest if I walk to the tax assessor's office around the corner, but I can get reg at the grocery store as well if I'm there anyway. Inspection station not far away, 3 blocks.

How is your '84 911 $180, and my '87 930 is $150?

And how are my 26 year-old motorcycles still over $100?
