I always find it amusing how bitter people can be. And a little sad.

Having seen most of the movies nominated, it was fun to guess which ones would win. Did pretty well.

Glad to see my favorite movie of last year, Jojo Rabbit, win best adapted screenplay.

Surprised at how nervous and taken aback Taika was in his acceptance "speech."

My fav part was when the director of 'Parasite' came on-stage to accept the third of his four awards.
Couldn't speak any english until saying "I'm ready to drink tonite" His interpreter looked shocked!

Shaun @ Tru6 02-10-2020 03:23 PM

That was funny!

Meanwhile a "politically active" friend shared this on Faceplant. He's often very biased so I had my doubt but it checks out.

Personally I haven't made to time to watch the Oscar's in over 20 years.

Oscars brings in the lowest ratings in show's history

Quote:

HOLLYWOOD, CA—According to sources at the 91st annual Academy Awards ceremony this evening, the nation's wealthy, privileged elite gathered to lecture the nation on the horrendous evils of wealth and privilege.

The wealthiest 0.00001% of the nation arrived at the exclusive, walled-off, high-security event in limos and luxury cars driven by servants in order to spend a few hours telling the nation's poor and middle-class citizens how they need to throw off the yoke of oppression put on them by the wealthy elite.

"It's the white, privileged, wealth hoarders that are ruining America," said one white, privileged man whose net worth is estimated at $160 million. "All you people in the cheap seats at home: you need to do better."

"America is just a terrible nation with no opportunity," said one woman who made $100 million wearing costumes and reading words someone else wrote off a page. "We must stop the 1% from hoarding all the wealth." Upon being informed she was well within the 1%, she clarified that it was actually the 0.000001% who are the problem.

Unfortunately, it looks like the event will proceed as planned next year as well.

It's not really a show that people watch to be entertained. It's more of a 'results' show of the movies that a person has seen the past year.
If not interested in current movies...don't watch it.
If you haven't seen any of the nominated movies..don't watch it.

It's that easy.

It's not really a show that people watch to hear smug political opinions of actors either.
It's just a drag that so many feel the need to do so (and think that anyone cares). Like going to see a band you like, only to cringe in embarrassment for them when they decide to spout their political/activist tripe in-between songs. No thanks.
Again, Gervais nailed it during his opening monologue at the Golden Globes. It's that easy.

Why do people criticize and complain about things they don't experience? Things that have no impact on their lives whatsoever?

I don't understand the serotonin rush? Is it a tribal thing? Is there really that much comfort in b-itching about meaningless things within a like-minded group?

What?

Is it a whole Id thing?

stevej37 02-10-2020 07:03 PM

My tv gets more than one channel....it's amazing. :D

Shaun @ Tru6 02-10-2020 07:04 PM

^^^ but having to get up to change channels can be tiring.

What, you did not take any Psych classes?

It is really not that complicated, people are the same as they have ever been, just more stimulated and stressed.

People like Mr Coffey watch clips of it online, rating numbers of viewers I suspect is a challenging thing to do accurately, but I guess trending down is no surprise, aren't all the awards shows experiencing this?

I was surprised that a movie I actually want to see won. I was babysitting last night.

Baz 02-10-2020 07:46 PM

I don't think I've ever in my life watched an entire Academy Awards show. I have watched some off and on while doing other things.

But I do that anyway with most other stuff on TV.

But I didn't tune in last night because I had other interests - not because of some dislike for the show.

I'm political but not to the point of being spiteful. I also happen to like movies a lot so shows like this pique my interest a bit.

I got some of the highlights in the morning news so that's about all I needed to know.

Times have changed......that's for sure.

Our local film makers won Best Documentary for "American Factory." It is a great achievement for Julia Reichert, who has terminal cancer. And it's a great movie.

Cajundaddy 02-10-2020 10:58 PM

I remembered it was on but never tuned in.

I haven't watched the Oscars in over 10 years. I used to love it, we were film buffs and friends were being nominated for best picture and best screenplay. Oscar night used to be a favorite family TV night for us. No longer. The utter hypocrisy of a bunch of jet-setting actors using their shining awards moment as a strident political soapbox sucked the joy out of the process for us.

You are actors, directors, writers, and sound artists that have been chosen to receive an award for excellence in your field. This is not your political soapbox. Honor the moment, dress nice, be polite, collect your lovely award, and thank those who helped you to make such an amazing moment possible. Now STFU and go sit back down. It seems there are about 20 million former loyal Oscar viewers with similar sentiment to ours. Soon they will be handing out the Oscars at a local Denney's restaurant to a viewing audience of 40.

Prescient. You are becoming a rare individual Baz.

At the risk of being ironic, everyone who doesn't care about celebrities or their political views, please just STFU and don't whine and complain about it on a thread where others enjoy movies, actors, awards, etc. You add nothing to conversation other than petulant millennial crying and whining with a little stamping of your feet while you wipe away the tears. Grow the F up and go shi t on another thread. No one cares about your views on awards, etc.

I honest to God can't wait for all you bitter old men to start popping off. The world just doesn't need you.

You can ask the same of the actors, giving political speeches. Their lives are entirely disconnected from what goes on in the country. Do you think it makes any difference whatsoever to someone like De Niro whether or not our economy is booming? He is set for life, if he failed to earn another single penny from now until his death, it wouldn’t matter. Plus, he’s an uneducated, uninformed fool. He has no first-hand information about what goes on in the government, nor does he have the mental capacity to seriously analyze it. All he has is a big mouth, which he uses regularly.

So, ask your questions of him. Why does he do it? Is it a tribal thing, is he amongst his tribe? Can he not control his id?

Put the shoe on the other foot and think about it for a while.

I think you’d find that more people would watch the Oscars, and fewer people would complain about them, if these entitled *******s would stick to talking about movies and leave the politics out of it. It’s pretty simple. It starts with them, not the public.

One last thing. Openly wishing that the people whose lives make your livelihood possible should die off as soon as possible is not a good look for you.

None of this is relevant to the thread and people who sh it on it. Have some respect. If you want to carp about celebrities, start your own thread. Don't inject your own bitterness into a thread, disrespecting the original poster. It's simply poor form and lack of self-control. Simply bad manners.

I don't have a livelihood. I'm retired. I restore Porsche, etc. parts simply because it's incredibly fun. Every single day. Doing a custom 993 engine Cerakote color scheme today. If anyone wants less than perfect work, there are plenty of other vendors to choose from. I wouldn't even consider hiding my disdain for bitter old men who come and sh it on a thread and offer nothing to the conversation. Man my life would suck if I worried what other people think of me.

Now, go start a thread discussing elitist, political Hollywood and have fun. Show some respect for Steve and others who enjoy film. Now scoot!
