What’s the deal with Range Rovers?

Funny. Read through this whole thread and realized I responded
How much I loved my 2022 full sized super charged RR.
I traded it in 2 months ago. 55,000 miles and the suspension compressor was going out
Every other week a new warning message. Water pump at 50,000.
Super charger rebuild at that time too. Car kept me up night. Such beautiful nightmare of a vehicle.

I have my fingers crossed everyday.

I have a 2020 RR Sport SVR. So far its been a fantastic vehicle. Rides great, the sounds from the exhaust are fantastic. The interior is beautiful and comfortable. Just finished about a 3000 mile road trip up thru Oregon and Washington and back the long way. The vehicle performed everything I asked of it absolutely flawlessly. I really hope it stays that way. Maybe I've been lucky, in 100K miles, I've only spent 700 bucks to fix anything on my Model S. (Knock wood)

Oh, BTW, I also have a warranty on the RR for another 50K miles and 4 years, so I sleep ok.

Back in 2019 I bought a 2007 Range Rover full size Supercharged with 280,000 miles on it for $4,900. Sold it late last year for $5,000 with 335,000 miles on it. Original engine & transmission, minimal repairs.

It was an amazing vehicle. Comfortable, fast, great tow rig, classy & incredibly sure-footed in inclement weather.

That's simply amazing. I would never have thought that a RR would last that long. I like them but they are known as the anti-Toyota.

I'll also add; the air suspension is not nearly as complex or horrible as some folks make it out to be. On my P38 its a bit older and has some proclivities but hardly a problem. The airbags are about $200 per corner.

On the Discovery 4, the airbags cost a bit more but are very reliable and durable. The ability to raise the truck up with a load is invaluable.

My first Disco 2 had rear air suspension. I could tow my Porsche on a full size trailer and not drag the rear bumper just by a push of a button adding air to the rear.

The beauty in my book is how much these lose value. Our Disco 4 was 6 years old when we got it w 50k on the odometer. We paid less than $25k on a truck that new cost around $60k.

I recently saw a early 2000s Range Rover advertised locally for $5k w 120k miles. Just getting started. Beautiful truck and all it needed was new air suspension struts or possibly a proportioning block for the air suspension.

I don't even know where to start with this topic. It's fear mongering threads on the internet like this one that keeps me driving luxury vehicles for pennies on the dollar - thank you!

Rich people buy new luxury cars in hopes of avoiding repairs. Once those repair costs start adding up, or the car gets too many miles, they trade it in or sell it on something like Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. This is where i come in and buy a perfectly good luxury vehicle for a faction of the new car price.

My current vehicle is a 2012 Land Rover, Range Rover Sport with about 130,000 miles on it. I bought it from the original owner that suffered through one of the issues with the 5.0 Jaguar engine - timing chain tensioners. Someone mentioned earlier about frame-off repairs needed for some engine problems - like earlier Range Rovers that had head gasket issues, mine has chain tensioner issues. I bought it after the dealer had already done the chain tensioners and the original owner stopped driving the car, and it sat so long before I bought it, that it had a dead battery.

After I bought it, I drove it trouble free for a couple of years, then fixed the only other issue they are known for - plastic coolant parts hidden under the intake manifold (like BMW). I fixed these myself for not much money, and it wasn't all that hard. But I wouldn't want to be the one that paid a dealer to do this $$$$. I don't pay the dealer to do anything - my car will never see a dealer repair shop. No thank you.

Now I've owned this vehicle for about 8 years and have changed oil and filters, tires and brakes.......the coolant system mentioned above.......pretty much have been driving it for free. I can imagine that one trip to the dealer for "service" would cost me more than I have paid total for repairs up to now. It's this dealer repair cost that keeps flooding the market with perfectly good luxury cars for small time schmucks like me.

So please, keep bashing these awful luxury cars that just can't be trusted are only a few miles away from complete doom. I love it!

Matthew, it's interesting that you love Rovers this much...that's a lot of the same food group in one fleet! I'm guessing that the A/C must be excellent in them and dependable? Major HVAC issues are a drag anywhere but in Texas would be brutal.

I know that they are not known for fuel mileage but how bad are they? Specifically the ones pictured, older Disco and RR? Thanks.

I think the same is true with Cayennes. I've been casually looking and for awhile I was driven away. Now I think I'd take a chance. In fact I let a real peach go because there was no paperwork and it was being flipped. But the price was right there. The guy sold it the next day after I passed.

Yeah, luxury cars are pretty much bought new by people that don't want to do any maintenance or repairs, so anything that happens is a "catastrophe" no matter how minor. The next buyer doesn't know how to fix them and can't afford to have someone else do it, so the cars get a reputation as problematic. A bit of cash and/or some elbow grease will get you a pretty nice car for cheap. Typically I look for a BMW with 100k and plan on it lasting to 200k. In two years with my X3, I've replaced the coolant reservoir on my X3 using a $50 kit from Amazon that took a bit over an hour to install.
