Conveniently unemployed! Perfect timing
It has been very strange lately. I’ve been running my family business(restaurants) for the last twenty five years. At the high point, we had three running, total of seven overall. Two years ago we went down to one. It was a major relief, my mother and I ran the last one, and we owned the property.
Around six months ago, my mother said that she wanted to retire and sell the property. I wanted to lease, but, she put her foot down. She didn’t want to be a landlord. She is near eighty and just wanted to be out. I was tired of managing staff, I just didn’t connect anymore to younger employees. I agreed. The last three months have been a nightmare. The staff unionized and walked out. That’s the nice way to put it.... I pretty much worked every day shlepping food along with my normal 60 hours a week. We closed two weeks ago with one employee left, and me. Down from thirteen a month before. We had meetings and informed everyone, provided bonus promises, etc. That might have been a mistake. But, we have always tried to be honest, in hindsight we probably shouldn’t have. Last week, we closed on the property. On Thursday I finished my responsibilities and turned the news on. I don’t think I could have been luckier. Right now, if the buyer didn’t show up to closing, we would be bankrupt. All restaurants shut down, it would be a firesale. We would be a carrion for the vultures. We were in a hot area and made out well. I still need to find a job in a while. But, because of the sale, I can put my feet up. The timing seems to be perfect! I hope everyone stays healthy |

Take at least 6 weeks off before you do anything. Fix the things around your house you've been putting off.
Minimize your contact with the outside world and maybe revisit some of your older hobbies. Most importantly keep yourself busy.

Wow, timed it perfectly. Relax and take a load off for a few before sinking into new ventures.
I do have a question but I know its off topic a bit. Can 13 people decide to unionize and walk off the job? That's a screwed up deal. |

You sound like a guy I would work for in my retirement and he happy about it. Good luck to you and yours.

Great timing.
We sold our house and close this Thursday. Fingers crossed there’s no bumps in the road... |

Congratulations on your fortuitous timing. Mom was right, again.
Running a restaurant would be so exhausting. Loved working in one, would never want to be the boss of a large number of my fellow employees.

Nice!
Good of you to hang in and finish the business off properly for your mom. The restaurant industry isn't for sissies. Hard work and long hours. Congrats!
