The Epi-pen idea is not a bad one. I have no idea what Rx might be effective but if a quick injection could halt the runaway cytokine storm syndrome for a few days to allow a patient's innate immune system to focus on the virus, it might greatly improve outcomes.

The signal, another cytokine designated OX40, essentially disables the brakes on the T-cell response. By blocking the OX40 receptor on T-cells, researchers were able protect mice from the serious symptoms of virulent flu (paper in J. of Experimental Medicine and reported in New Scientist). The drug, to be made by a company called Xenova Research, was supposed to be in phase I clinical trial in 2004, but we have no further information of its status (additional information solicited for this entry).

How would someone know when the right time was to provide the storm blocker?

For an allergic reaction, everything happens quickly.

For this virus, isn't the deal that you've potentially got it for 2 weeks before you show symptoms? So, do you need to give it as soon as you've been infected or do you need to give it when you show symptoms, or do you need to give it the day before you show symptoms, or does it come at some later date a week down the road after you've started showing symptoms?

Attending physicians say that they can "watch it happen very quickly" so they would be the best judge. This is not someone walking around a grocery store but rather a patient who is already seriously ill and hospitalized. Currently they have no clear treatment for this and it is similar to a violent allergic reaction where our own immune system rages out of control and takes us out in the process.

I think the Epi-pen idea with the right Rx could be useful in a hospital situation, not for the general public to carry around just in case.
