Lithium battery for 1992 Ducati SS

I would like to get a Lithium battery for my 92 SS.

I would like it to fit in the current space. I can shim it if required.

Has anyone done this? Recommend a brand? Any need to use a different battery tender?

Batteries plus Bulbs looks to have lithium option. I have had good luck buying there.

Lighter, last 2-3 times longer that LA batteries, but have jumpstart technologies which shuts off the battery but retains enough to start it should it be dead (6-7 times). At least for the Antigravity ones.

Antigravity is what I have in my bike. If your machine is older, be careful about charging currents. Newer bikes electrical systems are well regulated, but older tend to vary the charge voltage a fair amount, which the lithium wont like.

Just for reference, I removed 12.7 lbs of lead acid replaced with higher amperage lithium battery at a little less than two pounds.

Shorai has good reviews and enough CCA and cap for your Duc.
Best to get the dedicated Shorai charger. Other chargers may damage the battery.

I have a 96 SS. Don’t think I’d do it. Heck, a well tenderized battery will last years and when they finally crap out, easy to replace. Not sure our electrical systems would work well. There’s an old saying...if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Yes I just went through this with my 916. I was about to pull the trigger on a Li battery but the high cost and PITA factor with sorting out fitment and the news about boosting a Li battery could damage it turned me off.

I got 5 years out of a Motobatt AGM so I should get another 5 years out of the new one I picked up yesterday. It does the job.

Are you guys suggesting that the electrical system in an 1992 is not on par with something built by NASA? I am shocked and offended

The real source of the problem I am trying to solve here is that the previous owner installed 11:1 pistons in the bike. If the battery is not 95%+, it won't start. I don't ride the bike much, and even on a tender, it just seems like the battery degrades, just enough that its won't start without a boost.

Not a rider but out of curiousity and not realizing the Lithium made the jump to starter batteries, I googled it and hit on this.

HardDrive I had the same issue. I sized up the grounds and starter lead from 10Awg to 8 Awg (from what I remember) and went with the AGM battery (230 CCA 20Ah) vs. 210 CCA 16Ah in the Yuasa and it did the trick.

I tried one one on my '93. I had nothing but problems, and went back to an Odyssey. I'm not entirely sure what was going on, not being much of an electrical guy. It could have been the charging system, as some have stated. I had the specific, dedicated battery tender for it as well.

First start almost every day had to be jump started. Some days it would start itself, but the procedure was really weird. I'd roll it out into the driveway, prime it, and hit the starter. It would barely turn the motor. I would go back into the garage and gather up my riding gear, and lay it next to the bike, then try the starter again. Now it would turn it over a bit better, but still not start it. Then I would pull on my jacket and helmet, and try again. This time it would crank it with some authority, but still not start. Then I would put my gloves on, roll it down into the street, and try again. By now it would crank with authority and start right up.

It was almost as if the battery would build some internal resistance or something as it sat. It would take several tries on the starter, with the first acting all but like a dead battery. It would get better with each try until it started. Or not - then I would have to jump it. I actually added a hot lead to the positive side of the battery to facilitate that without having to raise the tank. On my bike, the monoposto seat has to come off to allow the tank to pivot high enough to get to the battery, which was getting to be a major pain in the ass.

The Odyssey fixed all of that.

Jeff, what odyssey battery did you go with? Was it the 680? And did you have any fitment problems?
