We used something called WATFIV in the early 80s. I think it was a modification of basic FORTRAN.
When i left GM I worked in a lab that had its own DEC PDP 11. Twelve of us shared this one 16 bit computer and we thought we were in tall cotton. “We got our own computer man!”

One thing I knew for sure while getting my computer science degree four decades ago....I wasn't gonna "program" as a career . Then I landed a gig with IBM in communications microcode r&d fresh out of college.....

I can become a network geek instead .

I loved being a systems programmer and network design, tuning, etc.

You may want to check with some of the states on the East Coast as some of them are still using COBOL and DOS for their unemployment filing and record keeping..................no joke.

Yep, WATFIV was a form of FORTRAN for the IBM computers

It's quite common in many large financial firms as well. There is always some old relic somewhere that two people in the entire firm know anything about that is the glue that holds all systems together...
