Yup. Fumes were causing my brain to say relieve tension using the valve adjustment screw, instead of turning the engine over. Derp.

No, the whole thing was inverted; the inside square edge was on the outside, and the rounded edge was on the inside. They're elastomeric so they can twist like this:

What a strange way of securing the rocker shaft. Is the metal that soft that it expands when you tighten the beveled bolt?

Nope, most engines didn't come with them. When the engine was brand new and the bores were literally perfect, they probably weren't necessary, but depending on how many times that shaft has been removed/installed, it could develop grooves/wear, so installing RSR seals when you have the chance is a good idea. Those grooves are there to allow the metal to flex from that point; they are basically the fulcrum that allows the end to extend/enlarge.

If it was solid the ends would not expand as easily. Because both the washer/nut have a beveled edge, it presses outwards into the beveled edge of the rocker shaft, expanding slightly when compressed.

Does that make sense?

That's a valid question. The outside diameter grooves are inboard of the recess to accept the thingie that expands the outer lip. I see it having nothing to do with that function.

However, it's German so there is a reason.

DIY Porsche How to on finishing up Block Assembly; I go over how to:
- Level & install Timing Chain Covers
- Carrera Tensioners
- Protect Zinc Plating
- Install an Oil Sump Plate
- Remove the headers
- Grind down an exhaust insert or two
- Assemble/Install the Throttle Plate
- Install the Crank Pulley & Engine Hook
- Modify/Install the Cylinder Baffles for Improved Cooling
& probably some other stuff. Please let me know if I did anything dumb, also, this shows my fix for the dumb exhaust inserts.

Moving camera vote 2. Cool restore, but if the camera moves, im out. Pawn stars does that and other 3rd person view point tv series does, Im changing the channel, barrrrffff...Motion sickness...

I had complaints about that in the first episode so I didn't do it again.
