It is a big sum*****. Bigger than my Mallards. I've seen one of these birds before and it's neck extends.

Yes, I have a couple of koi ponds. The koi died a couple months ago, so I only have ducks in the pond.

Check the first pic here...different plumage than the ones here, but the beak shape gave it away for me.

I have a big koi pond too. The fish are now rather large, like 70-80 cm but I still have a net of fishing lines crossing the surface too keep out the herons.

Black crowned night heron, I suspect.
Not sure if you have them in Hawaii, they are fairly common in florida.

^^ Agree, checking the ponds because they probably provided a meal or two in the past. We have quite a few here that roost on the golf course and fish the ponds.

We had a great blue heron eat several of our koi. It is a federal crime to harass them, so we are not even supposed to scare them off. My dogs do not know the law and they decided to chase it off. The dang bird had several hundred dollar meal. I don’t spend that much on my meals!

I'll concede to the Heron...kingfishers are smaller.

He's probably an oddball who followed another species flock across the ocean.
I wouldn't think of Herons as long distance flyers.
